What's Your Average Yearly Car-Related Expenses?

Expenses include car registration, fuel, maintenance, insurance, parking etc.

For comparison, a daily Zone 1 + 2 full-fare Myki (Victoria) transport fee is $7.52 per weekday.

For Myki money, let's say you use it each day of the week for a whole year: 52 weeks * 5 week days per week = 260 week days a year * $7.52 = Yearly Myki fares of $1955.20

For Myki pass, the equivalent of the above is a much lower $1501.50 per year

I'd do a poll but some people use their cars often while some don't use their cars at all so it might be an apples and oranges comparison. But if you want to, I'll add the poll upon request ($0-$99, $100-$199 etc).

  • Rego + CTP = $1,200
    Petrol = $25 x 52 = $1,300
    Maintenance = $400
    Comprehensive car insurance = $1,100
    Opal yearly = $38 x 52 = $1,976
    Parking = $0
    Total = $5,976

  • So the public transport costs make this a bit all over the place.
    My train expenses are about $45 x 48 weeks, a smidgin lower as I have the odd sick day. $2160. That is paid instead of a second car.

    Rego and CTP for me is about $900.
    Fuel is about $50 x 52.
    Maintenance is around $1800
    Comprehensive is $650.
    Depreciation: nil
    Parking also close to nil (and close to nil tolls).
    Car total: $5050

    We drive a 18yro car with LPG, but we do high kms as we live on metro fringe. We buy comprehensive insurance as it is $200 more than 3rd party only and would greatly help smooth our finances if there was crash or theft.
