Good Cheapo Chinadroid? Ulefone be touch??

Hello Ozb-ers,

Looking for a cheapo Chinadroid. Still spewing that I missed out on the TCL.

Got an email from GearBest advertising this Ulefone be touch (never heard of them). Also seen here for cheaper, but out of stock.

Anyone heard of this model? Also, when you guys that post the cheapo Chinadroids, how do you know whether it's actually good? Is it based on specs?

I'm basically after a cheapo Chinadroid because I feel it's not worth the premium on all the big brands. I understand with the big brands you'll basically be paying for marketing, warranty, and most importantly the brand. Main thing is that I'd like to be able to root the Chinadroid too, but it seems the less popular the phone, the worse the custom ROM support (which makes sense because less people have it).

Thoughts? Ideas? Other phones?

Thanks

  • i had two ulefone be pro they both were faulty and got sent back for different issues not sure how the be touch are though

    • What made you pick a ulefone out of all the phones on the market?

      • a good deal and the specs looked good for the price.

i have gone back to my Lenovo A8 which has not let me down.
The only reason i got another was because my daughter stood on it and cracked the camera glass.
I have since peeled it off and is fine again now.

so my next phone will be Lenovo again the build quality is excellent have dropped in face down so many times
        screen is still perfect.

  • Oneplus one?

Nah looking for something under $200AUD haha
Also ideally no larger than 5.2". I don't want to get used to such a large screen.

      • What about pushing the budget by $50-$70 and getting a Moto G?

        • Hmm probably not because I'm not super desperate to buy a new phone, and I am really looking around the $150 mark. Me saying $200 is giving myself a $50 AUD "buffer" already so 50-70 will stretch my buffer to $100.

Maybe Mlais MX Base? GearBest and a few other resellers are running a promo for the next week or so where you can pick one up for USD$99.99.

    Mlais MX Base 5.0inch 64 BIT 4G FDD-LTE Android 5.1 Smartphone MTK6735 Quad Core 2GB RAM 16GB ROM 4300mAh Battery.

Should get 4 days normal usage out of a single charge. Dual Sim 4G LTE too. 1280*720 screen still achieves ~ 300ppi and helps to draw less power. Camera sensor is also way above spec 720p@120fps 1080p@60fsp but who knows whether it'll be utilised.

    • Sounds good enough for my usage actually. Will definitely look into them. Do you know much about the brand/product?

Basically paying for marketing, the brand and warranty? That is virtually the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

Name one Chinese Android phone that has Amoled 1440P screen, removable battery, expandable memory, wacom stylus and a 8 core cpu build into one device? And a large active XDA community and hundreds of roms and community support to help with rooting and flashing etc and thousands of third party accessories makers.

This guy obviously knows nothing about phones.

Not really sure how you've contributed to this discussion…

I didn't at all say the expensive phones have the same specs. In fact, even if they did I still wouldn't quite consider them to be the same. Nor did I claim to be an expert with phones.

I didn't even specify exactly what I was after in terms of specs (except for screen size). To answer your question though, a lot of Chinadroids have 1080p, removable battery, expandable memory and dual SIM.

I'm not necessarily after the best of everything and it would be naive of me to expect it with a budget of <$200. I'm after something that I think will be sufficient for myself.

Anyway, the only phone that seems to fit your criteria is the Note 4. I don't think any of the other phones from the big brands fit that criteria, so it's pretty narrow of you to use that as the only benchmark. So whether chinadroid for ~$200 or LG/HTC/Sony/Samsung/Apple phone for $500-1200, all but one fit the criteria you mentioned.

you said, "I understand with the big brands you'll basically be paying for marketing, warranty, and most importantly the brand. "

you left out purposely or otherwise, specs and quality. Such a irresponsible statement to make because you're saying we are paying much more without getting any tangible in the phone itself, but the truth can not be further away.

    Second, what is Chinadroid?

you said, "I understand with the big brands you'll basically be paying for marketing, warranty, and most importantly the brand. "

See bold. (Basically) a blanket statement. Whether you agree or not is another matter and I obviously simplified it.

Leaving out specs/quality was nowhere near as purposeful as you make it sound, but even then, you actually haven't really continued this debate that you actually started. That is, what are you paying for when you pay so much more for one of the big established brands?

If you are so confident that there is value in paying an extra couple of hundreds of dollars for a phone, why don't you try and convince me with a couple of examples? I'm open to being convinced.

Was I right about you simply referring to the Note 4? It just seems like you were just referring to the Note 4 and only the Note 4. You gave no other examples.

In my opinion, the most valuable thing that you get out of paying a couple of hundred dollars premium for one of the phones from the bigger brands is warranty. This could be irrelevant if you buy grey imports, but just generally knowing that even if you do buy a grey import, you know that it'll be easier for you to obtain support. Otherwise in my view, the rest of the "advantages" vary from individual to individual.

      what is Chinadroid?

You referred to a "Chinadroid" in your first comment, so I don't need to explain since we're on the same page. Unless you somehow forgot in between making those comments? lol.
