Do you sneak drink/food into venues?

Does any ozbargainer here sneak drinks into venues? If so how do you do it?

  • Yes. If your talking about movies like Hoyts and other I just put in my school bag.

Yeah a bag comes in handy at the movies, buy better and cheaper food from outside and take your bag in

Hmmm, There's sooo many different scenarios this could apply too. Like 'the menace' and KY above, I always 'smuggle' lollies (etc.) into the movies; because I actually think they EXPECT/WANT peeps to do that. Otherwise, why would they make their own 'food' prohibitively expensive?

Then there's sporting events/ joints like that. Some allow you to bring your own food, others don't. On that 'score', let me just say it's amazing what you can forget you have in the pockets of your jacket (etc.). I feel no shame in 'accidentally' bringing my own food to any venue, if I am paying for entry to partake in their entertainment (i.e. not their food).

Then there's booze. I believe this is an entirely different matter. I think it's absolutely fair enough for ANY venue to actively prohibit/ regulate/ restrict/ monitor the amount of alcohol being brought in/ consumed on their premises at any given time, during any given event. It's the only way they can keep the situation predictable. For the good of everyone. So while as kids we thought we were pretty clever 'fortifying' bottles of Coke to take to The-G (etc.) back in the day, I personally like to think that remains the realm of kids, just like it was back then. I have heard some angst being expressed at family events about the price of alcohol ($7+ per stubby, etc.), but actually this seems to serve a function, which is to ensure that no one get's hopelessly drunk after entering the venue; because they simply can't afford to!

      A simple yes would suffice

      • +1

        "A simple yes would suffice"

No it wouldn't; because my answer was "yes, and no".

    • venue to actively prohibit/ regulate/ restrict the of alcohol

It is actually the government that does this, the venue simply enforces the conditions granted to them by their liquor license.

      • +1

well no venue wants people so drunk that they cant stand up, cant control them, cause fights or break things in the venue.

        • And that is something that is ultimately controlled by liquor licensing laws so that even if a venue wanted that, they aren't allowed.

    • No its price gouging….watching The Ashes…the Poms (used to at least) aloow you to BYO. Wine, beer, spirits, whatever. No issues with crowd.

I take a flask into The G. Why would I pay $9 for a rum & coke? Its just blantant price gouging. $7 for a watered down crappy beer? Forget it.

I'll take my own snacks into the cinema if I want to, I don't bother to hide them or anything. None of the staff have ever looked at me twice, let alone bothered to say anything about it.

If someone gives you attitude about it just say you have a lot of food allergies, no one is going to argue.

  • Have to. I know of no venues that cater for my 7 year old daughter (Coeliacs), if they kick up a stink I let them have it.

Yes, even though it's sad and true, I DO use it to sneak my own food in sometimes if the venue has ridiculous pricing (vast majority).

my wife has Coeliacs, and at one cinema they question gluten free chips, and i said we can buy your food, and eat them inside, but you will need to clean up a tonne of diarrhea after it, and that might cost more than the money we spend on your food. further more other patrons may leave..

Yep, love taking some pulled beef into the cinema, but have to make sure I shower before I go

    • lol. this comment is subtle but true.

  • for the record, no cinema can stop you taking in your own food, as long as it isnt glass or alcohol thinks its ok… i got event cinemas heaps and take woolies stuff in

    • Can you substantiate this claim?
I strongly suspect that any venue can regulate anyone bringing in their own food or drink on their conditions of entry - so long as it is clearly posted at the entrance.
That said, we ALWAYS sneak in our own food and drink - for everything from movies to the theatre. We recently snuck our own food and drink into Wicked.

      • a contingent law suit of someone getting sick from hunger or dehydration… world is stupid these days… no cant substantiate it, but events, hoyts, and a few others have never stopped me, i ask at titcket booth and they all said its fine, just no glass or alcoholo

  • If you don't let them check, they can refuse your entry .As simple as that.

But they can not force to check your bag when you want to leave. That's why you can tell security guards to piss off when you walk out of JB hifi etc.

    • That's why you can tell security guards to piss off when you walk out of JB hifi etc.

And why would you need to do that?

      • I said you can, doesn't mean you should.

Seems like you were making a point out of it. Seems a strange thing to say otherwise.

        • @Spackbace:

Yes, I was making a point. Glad you got it. Just said to them nicely that you don't want to show the content of your bag if you don't want to, and walk out. They can't touch you.

          @financialwar:

          They can't touch you.

That might have more to do with the three days without a shower thing..

      • Why do they need to check your bag? You have the right to a presumption of innocence, not guilty until proven otherwise.

        • But does it matter if they do? What, you don't want them seeing that big black dildo? :P

        • @Spackbace: Yes it does matter.
The same reason I have curtians & blinds on my windows.
The same reason I wear clothes in summer.
The same reason letters come in an opaque envelope.
The same reason the authorities need a warrant to search my house.
The same reason I use HTTPS, incognito tabs & VPNs when browsing.
The same reason the can't strip search you when entering or leaving a business.
The same reason my salary package isn't disclosed to my colleagues.
The same reason my boss can't ask for my social media, email, ect login details.
The same reason you & I use a handle/username/nom de plume/alias on Ozbargain instead of our real name.
The same reason I can't carry a gun around in public.
The same reason my tax & financial details aren't publically available.

I've never been in trouble with the law, and as such I deserve to be treated with respect and the presumption of innocence.

I always smuggle a bucket of KFC on-board when I am flying business class. The stares I get from crew and fellow passengers who must be so jealous of my finger lickin' chicken.

  • Yes. I use my bag.

  • I always take my own preferred and cheaper snacks etc to cinemas , never been questioned, at places like gabba I have been stopped and told I cannot enter with food items, they pull back when I say I'm a T2 diabetic and must have what I have brought to help manage my diabetes.
(Which is the truth & can be verified by producing my N.D.S.S membership card)

    • I take snacks and say that I'm extremely allergic to peanuts and ask the staff if they can guarantee that the food they serve is 100% peanut free? which I'm not but I hate paying stupidly inflated prices.

  • Was told that I couldn't being a Milkshake into Event Cinemas George St.- March 2015

Made it clear to him I was going to cancel my ticket (and I did). It might see trivial, but for some of us, having a dessert/ nice coffee at a quality cinema is one of the few affordable luxuries.

Was pretty annoyed as I had been explicitly told by a Event Cinemas Burwood employee, over the phone, that they were totally fine with outside food.

  • Everyone does it once a while. Either the venue doesn't serve your drink of choice or it's too damn expensive. Hiding it in a bag is usually the way.
