Moving house- Help needed in deciphering TPG coverage map and checking connection at new area.

Hi,

I am under TPG ADSL2+ with home phone now and but will be moving in end July. I checked TPG's coverage map and the new location seems much further from the tower. I have no idea what the numbers mean, so can anyone please advise if the internet connection is still alright for video streaming and gaming?

If not, what are the numbers I should look out for when checking the connection with another provider? Have finished 6 mths contract last year. Thank you.

Old location:
Line of sight distance 635m
Possible cable distance 818m
<200m: Sync down 18144, SNR Down 6.0, Atten Down 18.0, Sync Up 1020, SNR Up 10.0, Atten Up 8.5

New location:
Line of sight distance 1368m
Possible cable distance 3308m
<200m: Sync down 6675, SNR Down 6.1, Atten Down 48.0, Sync Up 876, SNR Up 5.5, Atten Up 29.3

    ADSL2 is accessed through the telephone line, hence the ;

    Possible cable distance 818m
    vs
    Possible cable distance 3308m

Length of line from your house to the Telephone exchange determines your maximum possible ADSL2+ connection speed. This is a physical limit, no matter which ISP you use for ADSL2+
Based on the estimated data that TPG have supplied you, your connection at the new house will be around 1/3rd that of your current place.

    Sync down 18144
    vs
    Sync down 6675

This ought to still be OK for video streaming and should be fine for gaming, but you will likely get more buffering moments at the new place and probably some more latency (lag) in your gaming.
For faster speeds, your only options are to switch to Telstra Bigpond cable Internet which is only an option if the new house has Foxtel cable running down the street (It will cost more), or 4G mobile Phone network internet which will also cost more.

It would also be worth checking NBN to see if your new address is due to be upgraded in the coming year.

    • Thanks Scubacoles! Just checked online- No NBN soon nor cable broadband. It is a pretty old suburb actually. Will check out the cost of the 4G mobile phone network internet else I guess we will stick to TPG.

Laggy gaming for my partner = more time for me maybe. haha
