Paranoid Android 5.1 on Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi (Grouper)

Hi all, I have been very happy with my Nexus 7 2012 until it received updates for Lollipop. The latest installed on my device is 5.1 which is also the latest version released for this device.

It has been very slow and I am waiting and hoping that future updates will resolve the performance issues but apparently it doesn't. Some people reported that 5.1 runs well on their Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi but that's not the case with me. It is so slow that it is frustrating.

I am thinking to flash it back to factory image KitKat 4.4.4 but I just read that Paranoid Android just released their version of Lollipop 5.1 for Nexus devices including Grouper. Has anyone got experiences with this ROM (especially on Nexus 7 2012)? Would love to hear your feedback.

Also, if anyone could recommend a Lollipop ROM that runs well on Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi. Thanks.

  • Try DU (Dirty Unicorn) . Here is their G+ community link and you'll get all information here https://plus.google.com/communities/109738128866939227235.

I m running DU on my grouper.

    • I flashed my device with DU and I can see slight improvement on the performance but it is still sluggish. I might try Paranoid Android and then decide whether I need to downgrade back to KitKat.

  • +1

I'm also semi-interested. My N7 is basically a brick with 5.1, and even though I've never bothered with custom ROMs before, I'd consider it just to get some use out of the damn thing. I had to set up tasker profiles so that the battery didn't drain overnight from wakelocks and shit, which really shouldn't be necessary.

  • I am also in same boat. It is slow and lags on every app.

  • thank you for your info @cniminc. So v9.4 is based on 5.1.1? How is the performance?

    • yeah 9.4 is based on 5.1.1 and performance is better than stock ie fast and fluid. I use nova launcher instead of stock.

      • Thanks I'll give it a try.

I got mine rooted, do I need to un-root before flashing?

        • I don't think so.

  • I have now re-flashed my Nexus 7 2012 Wifi (Grouper) with Paranoid Android. And I found out that this runs much faster on my tablet compared to DU. So I think I will settle with this for the time being. It is quite usable even though it's not as fast as when it runs KitKat.

  • I've been running SlimRom (http://www.slimroms.net/) for the past year (roughly) and is by far the fastest ROM I've found and tried that are present on XDA.

    • Do you run the alpha? Is it stable enough? Thanks.
