perhaps open the purse a bit and pay for the content you're after?

choice is independently funded and requires people to become members in order to fund their research - support the system or don't use it

Given the cost of the machine ($1000+), it's a small investment for a decent buying tool. You could achieve a similar outcome spending several hours trawling the net and reading reviews… but how much is your time worth, and how biased is the online content?

You'll also be a lot more confident negotiating the final price if you're informed about what you are buying.

First post is to leech off OzB Choice members.

      Not a good start.

quite often your local library will hold issues of choice magazines.

My only advise is don't buy a front loader.

      Why?

Front loaders are great, I'll never buy another top loader ever again.

      • Agree too disagree…we all have different experiences..biggest gripe is the spin cycle, not enough RPM'S to pull the skin off a custard.

I have found our top loader to be pretty good. Only two real gripes:
          1. hard to interrupt a cycle for any reason, and
          2. quite a long time for a cycle compared to the top loader.
          Otherwise I am pretty happy.

          1,400 RPM not enough?
          What a load of crap!

They work just fine, and the space on top of great for storing stuff.

@BigTed: Your top loader takes longer than a top loader?

        • +1

Of the dozen and a half cycles on ours I've found only one that won't allow the door to be opened during the wash, and a 15 minute wash can be selected.

        • @westical: Whoops.
I meant our FRONT loader is pretty good but it takes longer than a top loader.

    • advice.

i have an 8 year old LG front loader. hasn't missed a beat in that time. it does a lot of loads. i like the front loader as I can put stuff on top of it. currently I have a 30litres of home brew fermenting on it at the moment.

I had choice subscription for years. They seem to test a lot of things under laboratory conditions or test on things that don't matter. I've found some things they recommend aren't worth buying. After settling on their recommendation for an iron, was about to go and buy one, but at the last minute checked it out on product review and found that people who had actually used the iron stated it was a lemon. I cancelled the choice subscription and use product review (free) now.

  • Choice can only evaluate the product at hand. There is no test for reliability over time. For that you have to rely on brand reputation or other folk's recommendations.

  • Here's some free advice. Never buy any whitegood from Aldi. Even if they're giving them away. Within a very short amount of time, you'll be paying to take it to the tip.

  • Maybe consider negotiating one of those platforms that go under the front loader, as part of the deal? Worth considering and getting advice from those above.

  • I bought Bosch washing + dryer combo last month following choice advice but not happy with it as its front loader 7.5kg but not good for washing blankets. Wish I could sell it!

  • I think Samsung Washing Machines rated highly in the Choice test.
    Has the hottest drying cycle.
Or am I getting confused with something else ?
Maybe my memory is not fired up.

Anyway I have a Fisher & Paykel which is choice.

    • Hottest drying cycle - you're probably right
They're being recalled for the potential to start an electical fire

Six top loader washing machines are affected - the model numbers are as follows:
      • SW75V9WIP/XSA
      • SW65V9WIP/XSA
      • SW70SPWIP/XSA
      • SW80SPWIP/XSA
      • WA85GWGIP/XSA
      • WA85GWWIP/XSA

  • A real OzB'er would just take their clothes down to the river and pound them on the rocks to get the dirt off.
    Washing machine? No way.
Why are we helping this bludger?

  • Yes, local library will almost certainly subscribe to Choice.
