I have BHP Shares - Share Novice - I'm not sure what to do with them. Should I Hold On or Sell?

Hi guys,

This is coming from someone who has no understanding what so ever when it comes to the sharemarket. Have quite a few BHP shares that came from the grandparents years ago.

Plan on hopefully cashing out in maybe 4 or 5 years for part of a home deposit.

I missed out on selling when they reached $37 last year unfortunately. And they've gone down another $3 in the last month and now are at $26.70.

I'm concerned that if I hold on to them they may be worth bupcus when it comes to 5 years down the road.

Does anyone have any insight or advice on an appropriate person to talk to?

Should I sell shortly or hold on to them?

Keep them for a little while (see how the mining industry goes)

Dont forget that BHP split out South32 and so you have to look at them in totality to figure out how much your holdings are worth.

    • Ok, I'll look into that. Thankyou.

      • Your surname doesnt happen to start with an L, do you? I happen to know someone with the same name …

Sitting here at an ore conference, they reckon the ore price will be flat for another 2-3 years before going up

No worries! Obviously that's a prediction, but apparently that's what the experts think

Message me in a week and I'll send you the relevant slides

  • I'm on the same boat as you, bought it at 30.50. Now I just want to hit myself on the head.

  • Hold it and short some call options.

  • You could sell, and cop a capital loss (might be useful for tax purposes) and then re-buy at the lower price.

Or hold on for the ride. Buying and selling shares should really be a long term investment not short term.

  • 5.5% dividend yield fully franked. Never thought I would see the day when BHP was an "income" stock. Crazy times.

  • Basically the china boom is over and commodity prices are getting destroyed such as iron ore being at a 10 year low doesn't do justice for BHP, I believe it will recover but not like pre GFC prices for a long while

  • Thanks for your advice guys! Think I'll hold on to them.
