Baby Monitor/IP Cam

Chasing some advice…

Ok so we have a 3yo and 7mo. With the 3yo we used a video baby monitor which was damn good for keeping tabs on her, and was bought for like $100. Still have it but the connection on the main unit is crap and battery doesn't hold charge, so it's time to buy 1 for our 7mo who's now sleeping in her own room.

So, that out of the way, I'm considering a wireless cam and a seperate phone used for the viewer. I figure with the abundance of $30-$50 smartphones it should work out.

I'm chasing advice on anyone with this set up, advice of a good cam and a good app. The d-link app gets shit reviews so I might rule out anything made by them.

Also trying to (obviously) keep the budget under $200 ie under the cost of a brand name video monitor.

Thanks in advance!

  • Genuine Foscam.. The bottom end one can be got for about $100, I scored 2 for $160 a while back in an eBay auction.

The knock offs are all much lower quality both video and audio (I also have a knockoff brand that we use for travelling and the audio is so noisy it's borderline unusable).

For viewing, I use Tinycam Monitor Pro on Android (there's also an iOS app made by the same guy, but it doesn't seem as full featured). Tinycam is updated with new features so frequently it's almost annoying!
We use an old Android handset as the viewer, but also have the app installed on our phones.

We also take the camera away with us with an old Pocket WiFi set up with the same SSID and password as our home network.

I set up ours to have external access, so that I could log in from work to have an occasional peek and so that the Grandparents could do the same. That takes a bit more effort and obviously exposes you to more security risk.

  • We have 2 year old twins. Bought a DLink DCS-933L which broadcasts over the net so you can monitor from any portable device or computer. Has infra-red and motion detection. Cost $90 at the time and has been excellent.

    • That looks VERY similar to a unit I picked up on Clearance at Bunnings that REQUIRED internet access (no mention of that requirement on the box)!
Literally would not work if the internet went down!
And it required that you use a proprietary app to view the footage.
Appearances are not everything of course, but if the camera requires internet access, look elsewhere…
