Looking for Cheap TV with Plex

I recently had my 4yo Samsung TV refunded by JB after it developed a row of dead pixels, so now I need to find a replacement.
I've become addicted to streaming Plex to my TV, and am looking for the best value setup to replace this.

It seems like it will be more cost effective to buy a dumb TV and pair it with a Chromecast, but it's a deal breaker for me to have to control it through my phone, so does anyone know of a cheap 32-40+ inch TV that has HDMI CEC.

Side note: I'm in the USA until the 26th, so am open to buying a TV over here and bringing it back, provided it had n Australian compatible voltage and tuner.

  • wow get refund after 4 years that is so good.
i have lg tv, led 55" bought 3 years ago. it has built in plex client, so what you need is just a plex server to feed the media to the tv.
i installed plex server on my NAS. NAS and TV both connected by cable to router/modem.
you control plex via tv remote

    • Yeah, I run a Plex server on my PC and used to use the Samsung app to stream. I don't need anything fancy in a TV, just 1080p and Plex.

The TV was replaced under the extended warranty I got with it, which I previously felt pretty silly for buying.

  • Define 'cheap'. What is your budget that might help people give recommendations.

    • I'm getting $950 refunded so that's my theoretical max, but I'd prefer around $500.

  • Honestly, I would get any TV with good screen quality which isn't a "smart TV" and get a media center of some sort. For example, Chromecast, Roku, WDTV.

I personally use Roku 3 and think it works flawlessly.

  • I agree, but am struggling to find any non smart TVs that have HDMI-CEC.

    • +1

It really depends on how picky you are about quality and other features. For example, Dick Smith have a decent range of cheaper TVs (i.e. Changhong, JVC). Even Aldi have a cheap Bahun TV at the moment.

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. And unfortunately the price range you are looking at would not give you anything special. If you are primarily going to use it for Plex, it really doesn't matter…
