Flights Sydney to Cairns in 2016 July School Holidays

Hi all

Planning a trip to Port Douglas next July and it will be in NSW school holidays.

Need to fly Sydney to Cairns. Qantas flights are looking like $216 each way if we buy now, Virgin $275. Anyone know if we can expect the flights to get any cheaper than $216, considering it will be peak season and school holidays?

I don't want to buy at $216 and then find out that they normally go on sale for much less, so any past experience would be helpful. If only there was a way to find out historic prices for Qantas/Virgin flights!

Considered using Qantas points but at 17,000 per flight and $40 or so it didn't seem worthwhile.

Thanks in advance :)

Best bet is to be vigilant and keep an eye out for sales. However school Holidays almost never get flight sales. TigerAir have the cheapest flights to Cairns, normally around $155, but none have been scheduled yet as its a year away.

  • You have plenty of time to book.

I can't imagine it getting more expensive. Set up a price alert with Kayak/Adioso etc and they'll check daily for you and email once the price drops!

    • Good idea, i set up alerts with the airlines but kayak is probably more efficient :)

I flew from Brisbane to Cairns with Tiger during this July school holiday.
These tickets were bought about 10 months earlier(Sep 2014) and they were $69 each.
On the way back from Cairns, we got a free upgrade to Exit Row seats - so spacious!
$216 is bit too expensive. Wait for a sale.

    • Oh awesome, thanks for the tip :)
