EB King from eBay - Warning about Warranty Service, Non-existent

I purchased a 4TB NAS Red Drive from here less than a year ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/161267
Mine came in NO protection at all, no cardboard box around it, no bubble wrap, literally just a harddrive in a flimsy mailing bag (no padding) [p.s. if you pack it like this, it voids the warranty when sending to WD in Malaysia for RMA, they require 2 inches of bubblewrap). At the time, I tried the drive and it worked (didn't fill it to 2TB yet) and I didn't say anything. Now, I have found it fails to write after 2.19TB/4TB.
"Both of mine arrived… Pretty poor packaging for something as fragile as a hard drive." - Stone (16/09/2014)

Drive only fills up to 2.19TB/4TB then transfer rate drops to 0bytes/sec
Despite multiple contact attempts via ebay message and their email [email protected], there are no replies with regards to asking for warranty.

Google-fu'd as much information as I could, maybe mine is too weak :(

Usually for most ABNs you'll find they have the registrar's details there, but it seems as if the operator of EB King has wiped all their phone numbers off the face of the earth.

Address for service of documents: 560 Whitehorse Rd Surrey Hills VIC 3127
Principal place of business: 128 Hampshire Rd Sunshine VIC 3020

EB King's OzB profile points to their location is in Melbourne, even with (03) 8311 7650 (otherwise the phone number is incomplete), no one answers. ACN and ABN both confirm Victoria as their location, so phone area code should be 03. Has an automated answering machine that says no one answers.
Looks like I'm not the only one with warranty obligation issues

Just wanted to plaster this into the history of the internet, so others will take this into consideration before purchasing from EB King in the future. Consider the seller's items the same as grey imports, as it seems "Local Warranty" does not apply to their items as they don't respond. It seems as if this seller operates out of a garage and ignores warranty.

Happy to be corrected/supported with other people's experience of EB King's warranty service.

In the end, I went through to the WD Support portal, called up the helpline and went through to technical support (RMA menu option only allows you to check status or create a new RMA number, not talk to a human), where the guy on the phone has told me he will send a FedEx postage paid label for me to return the harddrive for warranty. Better than paying auspost $25-$30 for untracked shipping to some place in Malaysia.

EDIT: For more dodginess this was sent as a Message from Seller with the order confirmation:
"Message from seller:

Please note that due to some recent fraudulent activities. We no longer provide paper tax invoices and now provide them by email. Please contact me at [email protected] with your order number. Thanks!"

  • Bought a laptop from them few months ago, all have been good so far. Hope I don't need to send back for warranty based on your experience.

  • That is a shocking way to package a hard drive. I usually buy mine from Shopping Express when they are on special and they are packaged in at least 2 bubble wrapped envelopes if not a box as well.

Are you sure it the problem is nothing to do with the 2TB partitioning issue in Windows? I find it odd that they would work at all if they were damaged due to poor packaging.

    • Absolutely sure, bought a 4TB drive from the 20% off Ebay UK coupon code and it works fine, both on the GUID setting in windows 8.1

Yeah, all of my SSDs come from SE specials, packaging is so much better.
