Android 5.0 Won't Write to My External SD Card (Read Only)

Hi all,

My new Galaxy s5 won't allow me to write to my external sd card. I have read that there was a problem with kit Kat, which explains it, but I'm now at Lollipop and it still isn't working. I'm wondering if it is a legacy issue?

I have changed cards as well so i know it isn't that. Have mounted/unmounted, formatted, etc

Error is saying "external write to sd is not supported before 5.0. Please set up in Preferences" except I can't find where to activate it

Any thoughts? Thanks

  • Anything after kit kat will not allow 3rd party apps to write to external SD card, unless you rooted it. It is a security imposed by Google, not a legacy issue.

  • I read that it had been fixed on Lollipop. Bugger!

Far out, that is frustrating. Wtf is the point of an external sd if you can't write to it?? I suppose i will just need to copy movies etc between the internal and external storage

    • You should be able to write movies/picture files onto the SDcard fine. You just cant install apps on to it. Install it on to the phone and move it with Apps manager to the SDcard.

      • Cheers

I was referring to using tTorrent to……put files onto the SD card

        • You should be able to download files using any programs. You just cant install apps onto the sdcard. Im using aTorrent and it works fine writing on to sdcard on Kitkat 4.4.4

        • @HandsomeMonkey:

Weird, i keep getting a "cannot write to sd card - write protected" error with tTorrent

Maybe i should try a different program!

        • @jellykingdom:

          Try aTorrent..

        • @HandsomeMonkey: Yeah i wasn't massively fond of that program last time i used it. I really prefer the interface fo tTorrent etc etc

But if they can't write, they done wrong (see what I did there?)
