Bus Driver Took a Photo of My Friend's Car at Red Light

Hi guys,

My friend called me a while ago and told me that he was in the bus lane at a red light and the bus driver behind him made some hand gestures like complaining and then took a photo of his car.

I tried to find some information on the internet but I could not find anything related to photos taken by bus drivers. It is possible that the driver will take that photo to the police and my friend will get a fine?

No, he was just really attracted to your friends car and just wanted a picture of it for future reference/admiration.

I thought maybe he was a hobby photographer? Going to put it on Instagram later on when he gets home.

Nah, he's going to post it in the "Australian Bus Lane Abusers" Facebook group where all the bus drivers will write snarky comments and say unpleasant things about Columbian's "friend's" driving ability.

It's illegal to use ur mobile like that? Especially when driving public transport no?

It wouldn't be intelligent to bring that to the police from the angle it was taken right?

You know for sure the bus driver used a phone to take the photo?

He shouldn't be in the bus lane…simple.tell him to expect a fine.

My question wasn't whether he was right or wrong as it is very clear he wasn't.

Yes…. it is possible that the driver will take that photo to the police and your friend will get a fine

Your friend won't get a fine based on just a photo from a bus driver. If there are a number of complaints of drivers using the bus lane at that intersection, the police may do a blitz or two to deter drivers.

The bus probably had in-vehicle recording cameras, which would be better evidence than a still photo from the driver.

    Yes.

    Next, please.

There should be a sticky thread for the
      "bleedin' obvious" questions.lol.

I wish I was clever like you. At any moment I'm trying to say that my friend was right nor defending his action. It is very clear that he shouldn't be in the bus lane.

It was that obvious the question that you wasn't capable of answering it.

IF a fine arrives nominate your friend. IF a fine doesn't arrive (probably the likely result) then do nothing.

Either way, move on with your life.

  • IMHO tell your friend anything that will encourage them to be a safer driver. We have enough idiots on the road and it would be nice to have one less.

  • You're allowed to be in a bus lane if you're leaving an intersection (for example, cutting across a bus lane to turn left). A photograph would not indicate whether the car in question has its indicating light on.

    • True but not if there was no left turn at the traffic light.

    • Can't understand why your comment has been negged. It's true that the OP hasn't given the full details (probably because they don't know the full details of what their friend was doing?). Being in a bus lane at traffic lights, if you're waiting to turn left, isn't illegal. The details we have so far doesn't confirm or deny whether the driver was doing that or not. We're just assuming they weren't intending to turn and were thus in the lane illegally, which was pissing off the bus driver.

      In NSW:

General traffic is also permitted to travel in a bus lane for up to 100 metres to:

Turn left or right into or out of a street.
Enter or leave a property adjacent to the bus lane.
Pass another vehicle that has stopped to turn right or to avoid an obstruction.

At least in Sydney, there are also bus lanes which aren't bus lanes for 24 hours every day.

Yeah it's been in the news recently, there's a bit of a bus lane crack down going on at the moment. The bus drivers report the plate, then the police kick in your door (at the cars registered address) and release 3 unfed police dogs.

    • Unless of course they are busy getting coffees at Maccas. That can take a while…
