  • There's a thread which is 200 pages long on Whirlpool about this very topic. Why not have a look there ?

I mentioned. What people think today it matters caz I am after buying one for my parents.

My parents recently bought a new top loader, the only reason my mum gave was that it was easier for her to load and unload the clothes from the top loader vs having to crouch or bend down to load/unload a front loader. That could be solved by mounting it up a bit higher though.

I just replaced our 10+ year old top loader with a brand new front loader, only done 4 loads in it so far and very happy with it. Less liquid/powder needs to be used and it's super quiet.

I hear front loaders clean better (and save water), but you cant just throw something in there once you've started the cycle.

    also, WP

That's not necessarily the case. There are an increasing number that will allow you to open the door during the wash.

        And get wet shoes.idts

Ours Only allows you to open the door in the non-shoe-wetting part of the cycle.

          And get wet shoes.

You're not supposed to open it to put your shoes in, other than on the 'footwear' cycle.

          This.

    front loader definitely.

    • Yes but i found top loader bit cheaper :/
Now will save more to get Top loader.

      • Well after I made the switch to a front loader after my top loader started leaking my water bill was cut almost in half.

  • How much do people spend buying new front loaders?
I have spent less than $500 in the past 20 years buying 2nd hand toploaders.
Water is incredibly cheap vs cost of buying water saving machines.

    Top loaders:

More wear and tear on clothes.
    More water useage.
    Smaller loads.
    More detergent required.
    Noisier operation.
    Longer drying times.
    Less efficient in cleaning.
    Less reliable.

    • I see.

    • Less reliable.

Our 27 year old 'top loading' maytag would disagree

      • True that
Second hand Maytag is my current machine, I think it would take a direct strike from a small nuclear device to kill it and even then I am not so sure.

        • I recently did a bearing swap. If you end up down that path, drop me a message.

More wear and tear on clothes. - evidence of this?
More water useage. - water is near free
Smaller loads. - only if you buy a small washer
More detergent required. - again a negligible cost, ,a few cents/week for us
Noisier operation. - my laundry is downstairs, I hear nothing
Longer drying times. - puts clothes on line takes them off a few hours later dry
Less efficient in cleaning. - never had an issue yet in 20 years of using them
Less reliable. - I got 14 years from my first second hand machine and have had 6 from my current second hand machine, seems reliable enough given the small outlay in capital

I think it comes down to personal preference, I prefer a Top loader. As others have said they might not be as water efficient but you have no ideas how many times I have put a wash on and then 10 minutes later added some clothes. If I had a front loader I'd either have to wash that piece of clothing on it own (if it was urgent) or wait a few more days until I had enough clothes to do another wash.

I have not seen any extra wear and tear on my cloths, I use as much detergent as I feel is needed (good clothes get less and dirty clothes get more, ect) and if you are on ozbargain enough you can get detergent pretty cheap. I would say it is probably more noisy. My water bill hasn't gone up the past few months since I got my top loader (was using a free second hand front loader before that), even tho it's winter and I have been having longer showers.

As I said before it comes down to personal preference, the fact that I am able to just chuck more clothes in along the way makes a top loader the only choice for me, But other people have different needs and wants. Take the advice from everyone here and decide which one best suits you

  • Biggest advantage of top loader is that you can throw in more stuff halfway through the cycle…

    • I guess that all I need.

that will just make the already clean water dirty.

  • Going to have to say front loader although i loved my top loader. The thing is my top loader used to ruin my collared shirts after awhile. They would start to form those weird creases and marks that can't be ironed out. The thing i hated initially about my front loader was that it had and gave my clothes a weird smell, especially if i left it in there and forgot about it for a day. Top loader never used to do that. Anyway after a long time i found out i was using too much soap in my front loader, if you treat it like a top loader the excess soap gives it a weird smell because of excess residue build up (or something like that!). Now i use a small amount of detergent and a fabric softener to give it a nice smell. Still doesn't smell as good as the top load but it will do.
