  • Where are these made? Thailand, England?

mmm Doc boots. Ten years ago I would've been all over these. Nice price.

    • +1

At that price point almost certainly Asia somewhere….I had trouble finding UK built Doc's whilst I was in London last in June….

These prices look pretty good though regardless

      • +2

It's a shame they ever went offshore. Could tell the quality difference immediately. Yet the price of the boots stayed the same. Still have mine from 2001, made in UK (before they moved any manufacturing to Asia), and they're tough as… boots :)

        • +1

It's put me off buying my first pair of Doc's still considering but the mixed reports of UK vs Asia build has me wondering if they are worth the asking price.

I may make the jump and see how they go, but I did not find a pair of UK built boots in London to try on and am not prepared to order online for £195-200 for a pair without examining them.

Hi there - Nearly all the Dr Marten boots sold in Australia are manufactured in Asia. The UK made boots are rare and come at a much (much) higher price point. I have checked the boots and can confirm they are manufactured in China.

    Any other questions please give us a call 1 300 837 003

Also note we have a 14 day return policy (link in the listing).

    • Rep I am after the 1460 in vegan leather (size 6). I looked on your site and could not find them, just wondering if you stock this item?

    • -1

Do you sell any of the English boots though?

Might be a nice niche for you, if you don't…

BTW, is that person above me serious about "vegan leather"? Are they insane? lol

      • +1

Yes they make 'vegan leather' Docs. It's hardly an insane concept - plenty of non/faux leather shoes out there. Seriously. Everywhere.

Granted, they usually sit in the far cheaper bracket of shoes (either to cater to people who can't afford or don't want to spend on real leather.. or, at least with women's shoes/boots, they're made in fake leather cos made in China plus they're very seasonal designs which aren't really 'meant' to be worn for years and years… fashion is irrational like that ain't it.. so I guess spending up on leather which is ideal as it stands the test of time due to its durability etc would be wasteful and pointless on such seasonal items.

But apart from that obvious stuff - there's the ethical side of leather. I'm sure you were more pointing at the potential insanity of those who opt not to wear dead animal skin on their feet or bodies, but each to their own, and who are we to judge. I went through my own vego phase. My docs are dead cow though lol. Best mate was vegan and bought the vegan docs. They turned out surprisingly tough (they were made in England at the time.. things/quality may have changed since then). Only down side to the vegan boots were they were dull and had a rough surface as opposed to the lovely smooth leather surface. Still, that's just lame aesthetics. In the end it's a matter of perspective isn't it? Who is insane - the person wearing synthetic material on their feet or the person wearing dead cow skin? :P

        • Yeah, i get it. Just the marketing phrase triggered me. lol

        • +1

          @Son ofa Zombie:

Yeah. I guess it's specifically worded that way to cater for and appeal to yet another of the many subcultures which are likely to go for Docs.. even though 'vegan' shoes are everywhere..

        • +1

Who is insane - the person wearing synthetic material on their feet or the person wearing dead cow skin?

          Both.

Oh yeah, Dr Martens. I had a few of these in the late 90's / early 2000's and they were great. From memory I was buying the 8" boots for around $120 from Raben Footwear in Sydney.

They still make them in the UK but you need to find someone in Australia that sources them from the UK. Below is a link to the UK site and it says Made in England. Obviously prices have changed since I last bought them.

    • How come the 'new' boots have a different top edge to mine (originals made in England, bought in 2001).

      http://www.drmartens.com/uk/Men%252527s-Boots/Dr-Martens-Vin…

See how they're just cut straight/clean at the top of the boot with no edging?

Mine look like this in comparison: https://www.softmoc.com/Items/images/10072410%20L_XXX.jpg (though mine aren't embossed with the logo)

Notice how they've got that extra trim / edging. :S

They say on the Dr Martens page that those boots are a "direct replica" of the originals so I'm confused. To me it looks like they've dropped their level of craftsmanship / trying to cut corners, costs etc and simply sew together the boot from freshly cut leather. No messing around making a trim.

What were your boots like back in the day? lol. Remember the Dr Marten store which existed for a while in Pitt St Mall? Ah memories.

      • The non-vintage 1460's have that edging though…strange…maybe the original boots didnt have them?

In the good old days, you'd buy a pair boots for $120, wear them every day, and they would last many years. Same goes for the shoes. I think the shoes saw me through most of high school. The things just did not fall apart. My biggest regret was not buying a pair of cherry docs :-)

      • I was lucky enough to get a pair of the limited 1460's (1 of 1460 worldwide to celebrate their 50th in 2010).

No edging, but I'll settle for what i got ☺ Oh, they're English too.

Had them sent over from the DM US site. (cost ~ $70 postage, if i remember correctly, but still worked out not that much more than a standard Chinese pair here at the time)

For anyone interested http://www.solovair.co.uk/ is the company you want for original UK Docs.

    From Wiki:
NPS Shoes continued to make Dr. Marten boots and shoes under licence until the mid 90's. They patented the name Solovair in 1995 and now make their own air cushioned boot using the same lasts and leather cutters and machines used to create the first original Dr. Marten suspension soles in the UK.
