Help with Setting up VPN

Hi all,

I have a website for work that can only be accessed via certain allowed IP addresses. One of those IP address is my home IP address. The trouble is, I don't like to sit at home to do work. I like to go to the library or sit in a cafe near my house, to take advantage of the free air conditioning, some might say. :)

If I am out and about, I am no longer able to access the website, because the 4G connection on my phone is not static IP address. I am thinking of setting a VPN setup at home, so that I can login to my home network and redirect the traffic out from there instead so that my IP address to the world is now my home IP address.

What would be the easiest way of doing this? Does anyone have any advice where to start?

Thanks in advance.

  • vpn server.

It's going to be slow though…very slow.

    device-wifi-internet-computer-internet-server for every packet

    • Thanks. I am moving along that path. I also found out that ddwrt on one of the router I acquired from one of the deals on ozb could be used as a vpn server. Anyone has experience with that?

Why don't you use remote desktop to connect from your laptop to your PC at home. Then you can use your PC at home to do the work.

    • This is your solution.

Remote desktop is bandwidth heavy though, not ideal if you are working on a quota limited mobile plan.

And if he is going to remote into his home computer, his home computer also has to be turned on. He may as well be running Open VPN or Hamachi on an always-on PC.

      • This. I have tried remote desktop on my home server, it was really really slow, however was really easy to get it working. I think the limitation was my home internet connection uplink.

  • can only be accessed via certain allowed IP addresses.

are you allowed to change this to a domain name?

    • Nah.. I think it is locked down to specifically my IP address.
