Race the Sun developer here! It's true, the game's completely free for a day.
Why are we doing it? We just launched the game on iOS, and earlier this week we released a $1.99 DLC. We'd like to raise the general profile of the game, grow our audience, and maybe sell a few cross-promoted iOS/DLC copies if people love what they're playing.
It's pretty much as simple as that! Hope you enjoy it.

Reading the article I realise that they don't want to move into the category of free to play where as a lot of these type of games on the mobile platform are just that but devs get payed through advertisement in the game.
I don't mind adverts as long as they are not in your face and small out of the way type.
They say they have bills to pay and a backend to maintain which costs so I would have thought they would start to compromise before things really start to take their toll.
We felt that the PC audience was largely still happy to pay decent money for a good game
