Carpet Shampoo for pets?

Hi guys.

I've had a rescue dog now for a little over two months. She is housetrained mostly, but had accidents on two rugs, and now periodically goes back to the areas. I've tried soaking with disinfectant, and spray, but I can still smell the faint odour. And if I can smell it, she can. I understand you have to completely remove the smell otherwise they think it's okay to continue going there.

So can anyone recommend a shampoo or something? Preferably something I can pick up locally. It's getting frustatrating as I have a 10 month old who cruises all through the house. I don't want her to get germed up because the dog went inside again.

Thanks.

  • Go to your local pet store (e.g Pet Stock or Pet Barn) and ask about it. I forget brand I used. The petstore will have something suitable. There is a special spray you can buy. Even bunnings might have it as well.

    Completely correct.

Make sure when she goes outside to go to the toilet you reward her with a treat. Also if she barks at the back door to go out (if you have a yard) reward that as well.

  • Cheers. Yeah she is rewarded when she goes outdoors, and is now on a schedule of going outdoor every few hours. Hoping it starts to sink in, especially once the mats are fully cleaned.

That's good how old is she?

      • The vet thinks somewhere around six months. Can't be completely sure because she was originally found on the street. Blue Heeler (cross, we think)

        • Alright she is young then. That's good. I went through this when I got my new dog last year and the trick is to keep rewarding her when she is good and goes outside.

If you are for example playing with a toy inside for 45 minutes after playtime let her outside to do her thing.

If she sleeps inside then in the morning when you wake up, take her outside when she goes, reward her and gives her heaps of attention.

Trust me she'll get the idea

Out of her own free will my dog started pawing at the door when she is inside to go out and if I don't notice it she starts barking. I know quite a few people with dogs who do this so if she starts to do it make sure you reward it.

  • We use rug doctor odour eliminator just as a spot cleaner.

    • Thought I had seen something like this at bunnings

  • +1

Get the "Urine Off" or "Urine Free" spray. Available at most pet stores and also online (I've been using Urine Off and found it cheapest on eBay with free shipping).
Give the accident area a good spray, let it soak in and that should do the trick. Good luck!

  • Here is a good link with heaps of good info

We have dogs and ferrets in our carpeted apartment and the best thing we have found is quick action with a pet odour spray lots and lots of it till the carpet is really saturated tamp it down with a bare foot and leave a towel over the top of it for a few days. A good chemical free steam clean every year or so does wonders also. Note some of these cleaners will bleach carpet depending on the type and colour check in a hidden corner.
