"Fully Refundable" plane tickets

Anyone know if Qantas "Flexi" tickets actually refund you the whole amount, in AUD (not voucher)? Any fees involved?

    • The second link shows:

If you cancel your flight, you may receive:

A credit voucher^ to use next time for a flight anywhere on the Qantas network, or
The value after fees have been deducted as a refund, depending on your fare conditions

Obviously none of us want that

  • I was just about to post something similar but in the General area. I need to spend $10k in a week (points promo) and figured business class flights were the way to go. However the more I look into it, the more it seems they are not actually that easily refunded.
E.g. Virgin says they are fully refundable but when you go to actually book the ticket, the "Fare Rules" state that there is a $300 charge. I would also imagine you don't get the credit card fees back either. I just called up their call centre to confirm this and the lady said that the fare rules on the booking page after you have selected your flights override the general rules on their site.

A few people have suggested booking accommodation using an online site which will charge you the whole amount, not just hold your cc as security until you check in.

Can I hijack this thread to see what people have thought of to make sure they can get their big cc spend back in full?

    • I booked a Virgin business class seat last year because it was fully refundable (even though it was on sale, it specified refundable.)
Turned out I did need to cancel (and book another flight with them.)
At first they were 'reluctant' to refund, but I told them the fare conditions specified "fully refundable" and after (presumably) talking to a manager they allowed it. BUT… it was going to take (can't remember exactly) two weeks for the refund to go back on my card. Given the amount I ended up taking enough to cover the new booking in the travel bank and the rest as a refund. Can't remember how long it took for it to come through.

    • Credit card fees are never refundable with Qantas.

  • someone told me qantas is more honest about refunding the tickets. that guy used this method to get qantas lounge invitation (they came in on the mail so there is no way to cancel), then refund the ticket.
