Possible to do a daytrip to another state/island from Sydney?

Hi,
As someone who enjoys the outdoors, I usually spend my weekends driving to different places with my missus. Unfortunately she works Sundays and I work till late on Fridays so we really only get to spend a day out on Saturday as opposed to the entire weekend.
Living in Sydney, it feels like like we’ve visited almost every place that we can by driving (central coast, Newcastle, Woollongong, Katoomba etc.) Once we even went Canberra (6.5 hour round trip). It seems difficult to go further because it feels like half the day is spent travelling.
Anyway, I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for us in terms of maybe flying to another state or island for a day and whether that’s feasible. It would be good to do something different for once. My main concern is with time, because I know getting to the airport/flying takes a while and obviously I want to spend as much time as possible at the destination. Staying overnight however is out of the question.
Thanks!

Fly to Brisbane or the Gold Coast on an early morning flight and rent a car for a look around. Catch a late flight back.
We have done it just as a easy get away and if you plan your day before you go it is fun.

Is staying overnight problematic because you work late/she starts early or for some other reason?
Otherwise I would say leave late Friday evening, stay over for a full day in another place, then late flight home.
There is a flight to Melbourne leaving at 10pm Fridays.

We did GC - Syd - GC in a day (That was when Tiger were doing $10 flights)

Syd - GC - Syd shouldn't be a problem. Taking a backpack will reduce airport time.
Pick a plane seat close to the front door for a quick exit on landing.
Take the bus all the way from GC airport to Movie World and back. MW Gates open at 10am.

  • I think the only places, to which you can do an interstate day trip on commercial flights from Sydney, are Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Adelaide. Perhaps Tasmania is possible at a stretch. Anywhere else won't have early or late enough flights or is too far away.

What if you came back on an overnight train, or dare I say bus?

  • How about Norfolk Island? Although it would require more than a day. I wouldn't mind visiting my self.
