Purchased an Unregistered Car (NSW)

Not sure if ozb is the place for this but just asking a question.
I just purchased an unregistered car a few hours ago. It's been out for a month and only needs a pink slip. I was intending on getting the pink slip tomorrow and registering it in the afternoon if all goes to plan, however, I just read online that if you buy an unregistered car you need a blue slip… is this true?

Has anyone done this before ? And if so what steps do I take to getting it registered ASAP?
I don't know if it will pass a blue slip :/
Thanks

  • You need a RWC (Road Worthy Certificate) whenever a vehicle changes owner and/or out of registration. However, it all depends who you bought the car from. Is it from a third-party or someone related/known to you? If you don't have the cash for the RWC and/or repairs, you can always renew the current registration as long as the person whose name is on the registration is okay with it.

    Hope you didn't buy a dud car :(

    • But can I get a pink slip for it if it has only been out of rego for 1 month? Or does it need a blue slip as I'm changing ownership? The car isn't a dud at all. Reason she sold it was she's going overseas for 2 years on Thursday. Hence she didn't register it last month. It will 100% pass a pink slip but I don't want to have to do a blue slip.

        I apologise, I didn't realise you were in NSW. Not sure how similar or dissimilar they are, but the rules in QLD state you need to get a RWC if changing ownership. If the car is out of rego for 1 month but not changing owners, you can just renew it (not sure how long you can leave a late renewal in QLD). Hence I hinted at getting it renewed under the original owners name. But you're best off getting your information from someone who knows the NSW rules. I'm only speaking for QLD.

        • Thank you! Sorry I didn't mention I was in NSW. Sometime forget were not all from here. I ended up transferring it into my name. Only had to get a pink slip and it is now registered ! Unfortunately I had to purchase 1 year of rego instead of 6 months as it was out for longer than 21 days. The rms website is a little bit misleading.

          Thanks for your help though!

          @goog101:

          Thanks for your help though!

          You're most welcome. I did the silly thing of buying a used car (in QLD) with all my savings before I realised;

          A) didn't get a road worthy check
          B) the car was registered in the owners ex-boyfriends name
          C) it required so much work that the RWC place I went to told me it would be better used for scraps
          D) well, shit

          At least I got this in the end. It was a life experienced which paid off.

        • @Dagmar: definitely pays off to have a nice car ! And yours is very nice BTW ! It may cost more upfront but they last a lot longer and they have a lot less problems than older cars.

      @Dagmar I have no idea why you are getting negged. Yes, the OP is in NSW but they don't state that in their post. If you don't live in NSW how would you know? Why get negged for trying to help? I've fixed that with a +

      • Thanks, mate! I was wondering too until I read your comment. Oh well, should take more notice in the future.

    I think Pink slip is enough, my experience was buying an unregistered car at auction which came with pink slip. But you will have to pay for the 1 month unused rego, that is the rego starts from a month ago instead of from when you pay the RMS. Don't forget you'll also have to pay 3% stamp duty on the purchase price and the transfer must be done within 2 weeks of purchase or you get a fine of around $100. You may have to get a paper copy of the green slip as it won't transfer to the RMS automatically if bought online.

    • I think you have correctly assessed the situation. If you want to avoid the "blue" slip you do need to pay the rego from when it was due. (max 3 moths)

      Although if it cant pass the blue slip, do you really want to drive it. Blue slips are done by private inspectors not like the old days of having to drive it over the pits.

      You can drive it to the nearest inspection station. Make sure you have the papers with you

      A blue slip is a full inspection of your vehicle, different from a pink slip, as it checks all the components of your car, for leaks, lights, seat belts, brakes, suspension thoroughly. A blue slip also has a written off vehicle check, that identifies stolen vehicle that have been re-badged with number plates from a wrecked vehicle, a forensic vehicle identity check that identifies any vehicle and a design inspection to make sure your vehicle is up to manufactures standards.

      • I'm not sure if it would or would not pass a blue slip, the car itself is fine but Ill lose my job without a car so I needed it on the road ASAP. Thankfully it passed a pink slip and it is now registered.. the website just confused me stating I would need a blue slip hence the question on here to clarify.
        Thanks for the replies though !
