Will Disabling Data Disable SMS on Android?

As per title. If overseas with roaming enabled, I'd like to still receive SMS messages but I'd like to disable internet (over cellular connections) for obvious reasons.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Cheers

No. SMS has nothing to do with data.
With data off, you can receive calls and sms.

    But… if I were you, I would get a cheap 2G phone.
You have to remember that if you accidentally turn on your data, everything from you email, to facebook, to whatsapp, and everything else will start syncing and downloading/updating stuff.

you could still get stung for receiving SMS
    check with your provider.

  • SMS will still be able to be received (so long as you have a network connection), but MMS won't.

  • ALSO MMS will not work, only SMS. MMS uses data via a link.

  • If someone sends an MMS I assume you'd receive it if you get into WiFi range?
If you're going OS also look at getting a sim card there. I think I spend about $20 in Malaysia last year for a sim card and a few gigs of 4G data for two weeks (although then you won't receive SMS if people send them to you).

  • SMS will still work on roaming, but is generally charged at a higher rate.

MMS over wifi is network dependant (assuming you're using the actual MMS and not some other app or overlay on your phone that transmits the media over non-network data). On my android phone with Vodafone, it temporarily switches from wifi to network data to download the media, then switches back to wifi (even within Australia).

Most of my messages nowadays are sent via something like Whatsapp. So even when an overseas simcard is placed into my phone, the profile is still registered under my usual aussie number and any data connection can still pick up the messages like I'm at home. The messages are not charged individually like SMS'.

I have a $10 nokia phone that I put my aussie sim in and leave at the hotel so that at the end of the day, I can see who's tried to contact me.
