Invicta is a company notorious for having RRP's at a ridiculous price and having an almost permanent 80% reduction to make the watches seem better value than they are. They also are known to have quite poor customer service. The best watch on that page is the 9094OB which uses a high quality Seiko movement and is totally worth the price, the others use quite low quality movements.

      related to kathmandu, must be…
except kath has good customer service .

    • Excuse my noobness but how's low quality movement? Do you mean it doesn't keep time properly then?

      • +3

It refers to the quality of the workmanship and parts. If you read the reviews on invicta watches they often have things go wrong that won't go wrong on higher quality watches like jams or malfunctions. As for keeping time properly, like all things you get what you pay for, the higher quality movements will gain or lose less time per day than a poor quality one.

Let me put it to you this way, if the watch actually retailed for $1500 like they claim, how on earth would they be able to sell them for as low as $60? They are cheap watches that are advertised in a very misleading manner.

My $12 casio keeps great time.

@macrocephalic: I agree, I have 2 casios, the difference is that casio has always made tough, strong, and accurate watches, which is much easier with a quartz watch. Also they don't claim that a $12 F91w is actually worth $100 and then fake discount it down to $20.

        • @macrocephalic: Casio digitals are a whole different ball game for $/accuracy. (I have one coming in the mail from amazon myself)
I had a cheap Citizen a few years ago that I had awful difficulty with. The dials on the face stopped working entirely and at one point it managed to shave off a long strip of metal from its own internals which then jammed into the watch movement.

Obviously the 'movement' is the inner workings of the thing that keeps the time and turns the hands. Most watch brands use the same few movements that they buy in bulk from the movement factories, this is true for either Quartz (battery powered) or Automatic (no battery) watches. There are certain high end watches that use their own specific movement designed by master watchmakers, often with a unique feature or features specific to that watch. Sometimes higher end watchmakers take the stock movements and change them a little to improve or add in an extra feature or 2. This happens most often for automatic movements, probably because they are much more expensive to make as they are small mechanical machines as opposed to electronic circuitry. Invicta do none of these changes to the movements, they just take the factory movements and stick them in their cases.

Most of the Quartz movements would be mass produced in an assembly line somewhere. Quartz watches are normally very accurate and very reliable. The movement you get inside this Invicta will probably be almost identical to the one inside the watch you buy at the counter of a service station somewhere for $5. In terms of them being 'Swiss' that is probably also questionable. There are high end swiss Quartz movements but the definition of 'swiss made' might refer to having some swiss input into the assembly etc. I cant remember what the minimum swiss input is but invicta would likely be exploiting that ruling.

Generally the 'watch' community regard invicta watches as a bit of a running joke. They are essentially a chinese watch company that, in an attempt to charge higher premiums, bought the rights to the name of an old bankrupt swiss watch company called 'invicta'. there are a load of these companys around in the watch industry, look for others such as croton etc.

I've never owned an Invicta and almost certainly never will.

    • Hi nmachine,

Which one is a better buy Invicta 8926obv2 or 9094OB? I think both are Japanese Movement.

      • I believe that they both have the Seiko NH35 movement, so it comes down to if you like blue or black better.

  • Some models look much better than those Citizen Uranium watch posted lately.

bought one years ago until battery flat recently. Bought it purely for the look and want a big wrist watch. Works well never late for office.
Just not working well for Transperth buses…

  • Invicta Men's 19188 down from $1495 to $59.90!!! Yeah right!!!

These are Chinese made watches…..I couldn't find any place selling them close to this.

Still $59 is decent. Seems to range from $149 to $59 on ebay

    • A lot of well known brands infact premium brands manufacture parts in China and assemble them in Switzerland. "A watch movement is considered Swiss if: the movement has been assembled in Switzerland and, the movement has been inspected by the manufacturer in Switzerland and; the components of Swiss manufacture account for at least 50 percent of the total value, without taking into account the cost of assembly.

Aren't these watches always on 'serious markdown'?

If you go an Invicta you want to get something like the 9937 model with the swiss movement, they have a few other swiss movement models of well. This of course costs more.

If you want a well engineered inexpensive watch try Orient. Designed and manufactured in Japan since 1950, you can pick up a 300m diver automatic (mechanical self-winding movement) from around $150. Look at the reviews by satisfied Orient buyers on Amazon (this page also contains a lot of background on Orient).

NB: this particular watch is currently around A$200 but shop around .. :-) .. !!

PS: I bought the Orient Mako Pepsi Diver last year and we're inseparable .. :-) .. !!

    • Good call. i am also a big fan of the Seiko Monster!!

  • My last post was flagged because it had an Amazon link to the Invicta Men's 9937 Pro Diver which is better quality and has a Swiss Selita movement. However, you would be crazy not to fork out for a Seiko SKX007 or SKX009. A truly famous and indestructible diver. Invicta are famous for their absurd RRP, nothing else really.

  • I love my 1517. Only strap is clothed leather which in my case wears quickly.

    But it's beautiful looking watch.

    And it's a lefty, but I don't care.
