Cheap and Good Places to Fix an ASUS Laptop - MELB

I dropped my ASUS laptop, and the port where you plug the power cable into became loose or broken (no idea), so I'm unable to charge the laptop anymore; the laptop still works fine. I thought it'd be an easy fix, so I tried to open it up myself, but 3/4 of the way, I realized it bit off more than I could chew - wasn't even able to get all the parts open.

I took it to the ASUS repair centre, and they didn't even open it, just looked at it from the outside and quoted me $250.

I thought that was a rip off considering he doesn't even know what was wrong.

Is $250 s rip off or am I just being cheap?

Anyone recommend any other places where I can get a better quote?

Cheers

If it is just the power jack, which it sounds like, try a TV repairer. It should just require re-soldering to the motherboard. I got a similar thing fixed for $25.

    • Thanks for the suggestion. will def try that out.

    • Just to follow up on that; not to sound condescending or anything, but will TV repairers know how to take apart a laptop properly?

      • Yes, its really not as hard as it may sound.

      • It isn't too hard. And have you seen what's in a TV?
I'm no expert and can assemble and reassemble laptops (only occasionally having a screw or two left over).

  • Years ago I had a Compaq laptop that stopped charging, it was under an Officeworks extended warranty so I was not out of pocket but they replaced the entire motherboard for me. My Compaq thought it was a HP ever after (HP BIOS screen, blue power LED indicator in place of the original orange one). The repair report noted that the "power board failure".

That said in your case they are not really inspecting the unit, it could be worth taking it to a local technician to get a proper inspection/quote. I would not advocate a TV repairer.
