Garage Door Installation to an Existing Carport - Brisbane

Hi,

Does anyone know if council approval is required to install an automatic garage door to an existing carport?

I don't plan on enclosing the sides of the carport so it will still be open.

I have seen a few houses in the street with panel style doors installed, but my next door neighbour has one with horizontal bars because apparently that's all they were

allowed to install.

  • No council approval required, but ensure it is installed correctly as they are heavy units and most carports are not originally designed to manage the weight.

  • You might need to be careful if you have any heritage requirements in your area. If the neighbour was only "allowed" to install that style then ask him what the council cited.

  • Why not ask the Council? Where we live (inner-Melbourne), pretty much anything visible from the street needs a permit (e.g. different colour fence, security bars on windows, water tank, solar panels…) Having said that, I'm sure many people can get away without any permit.

    • Brisbane council doesn't tell you anything over the phone these days. You need to submit an application to find out whether a permit is required. I have tried.
