Good but Cheap LED Downlight Kits

Hi guys,
I am going to be replacing all my old halogen downlights with new LED downlights. Was wondering if you guys can recommend or suggest any good, but cheap LED downlights, i will need 40 or so of these. I do want to just scrap my old ones and get a new kit with a tranformer included. I need them by Wednesday the 12th of August, online may be an option if cheaper, but prefer local stores around the Castle Hill, Sydney area.
Thanks for the help.
Edit:
I have bought LED downlights, and am happy with them so far.
Shop: Mega Lighting in Castle Hill, pretty sure they have a store in Auburn also
Price: $16 for dimmable stainless steel 10w LED downlights(price may have changed)

Sorry OP..this isn't going to be cheap.

    • Agree. There is a perception that they're cheap based on the price of the Chinese ones but they are genuinely scary. If you import them and they're not up to Australian standards and installed by a licensed electrician, good luck getting an insurance payout if anything catches fire.

Why don't you do it gradually? Pick out where you'll get the best impact from them, and then upgrade those first. Do the others later if money is an issue.
(Plus it is probably good to make sure they meet your expectations before shelling out too much coin and doing a whole house)

Here's just one of the videos on why you probably don't want them in your house:

    • Actually found above average downlight that work like a charm for only $16! With everything included(transformer, etc.) and was also dimmable. Also was not one of those cheap chinese crap made out of plastic which turn yellow in a month, stainless steel! Really lucky and found a good bargain IMO.

      • Where did you end up shopping?

        • Local light shop in Castle Hill

Same position, but lifespan is most important. any suggestions?

  • How cheap is cheap? I can maybe do an exclusive ozbargain deal.

What are you looking for in a downlight?

      • Warm white
      • 800+ lumens
      • 60 or 90 degree beam
      • dimmable
      • Ideally IP44
      • low glare
      • good warranty and lifespan

      But that's just me.

    • They look pretty good! however do you re come d getting the ones with changeable bulbs or ones with inbuilt led lights?

I do Gu10 gimble kits too.

It's really a horses for courses kind of thing - the market trend is to get the integrated (all in one) design one with the opaque lens. These spill light everywhere (120-140 degree beam angle), are generally pretty glare-y, and if the fitting goes on you, it can be a bit of a drama getting a new fitting that suits (overseas ones I've come across generally use random MA inputs such as 825, 330, 250 etc.

This one is a newer COB design with a clear lens that gives great output and controls glare (60 degree beam angle). It uses a standard 700MA driver that has full SAA approval.

Gu10/MR type downlights are great because they are easily changed in event of failure. I actually prefer this style myself.

I assume you are getting an electrician to do these installs, right? Not sure on installation costs but it's generally a good idea to get them to install them so you can just plug/play the downlights (as opposed to hardwiring).

  • I recently posted a similar topic and got some good responses - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/204975

Still haven't purchased but have a short list.

I have these and love them. rate well on led benchmark.com too. 4000k is a great colour, not too yellow or too sterile - but they come in 3000k and 5000k too. wider beam angle than you're after - but if you want them in living areas i'd recommend a wider beam angle.

using cabac 2 wire push button dimmers on mine

    • Do these guys always charge big $ for shipping? I phoned for a quote and <20kg around $30 >20kg more costly to regional areas

      • Hmm can't remember, might have been $10 or $20 for 50 or so lights. A guy I know haggled with them and got a a bit more of a discount

        • Ok thanks for that. Knowing people does help thats for sure!

  • oh - they're ip44 too. i have them above my shower heads :)

  • haneco

very popular with the trade/commercial. cheap but low fail rates

  • I bought Atom ones for between $33-$37 onlne. Its best to buy all in one as I could have bought in bulk for $30. Instead of I bought in batches. Not cheap but great lighting.

  • Been using led downlights from these guys for years, no problem
