DIY Alloy Wheel Repair

I bought a new car 2 months ago and just scratched on the alloy wheel against the kerb (beating myself up!!). It is not too bad but unsightly.

Wanted to know if you have any experience with DIY alloy wheel repair kit. Has anyone got any experience with it?

Where do you buy, what brand, is it easy to repair, how much?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

  • How bad is it? Why even bother? Most likely going to knock it a few more times down the track. If you care this much about it, Id get it professionally done, There not that expensive.

  • Search wurth wheel repair on google.

  • a google suggests all you're doing is sanding, priming and repainting.

    That's a lot of effort

  • Painted or Polished?

  • Steptoe, my wheel is painted.

Dylanando, do you know how much it cost to get it professionally repaired? Only minor scratched (typical kerb damage), hence my original thoughts of DYI.

  • +1

I personally wouldnt bother fixing it until I had to sell the car. Pointless fixing it now and then a bit later you do it again.

You're looking at around $150 per wheel.

  • I've done it myself but my situation wasn't quite the same. I bought 1 repair kit from supercheap (blackice brand) and a large can of the "alloy wheel silver".

The wheels i got were about 15 years old (bought very cheaply) to suit a car that is 25 years old (i wanted somewhat period accurate alloys).

I sanded all of them down completely and touched up rash and repainted all of them.

The putty that comes with the kit is fairly easy to work with. I'm not convinced the finish of the silver is smooth enough without some further buffing/polishing etc..

It will come down to your wheels if it is an exact match. Alternatively, you might be able to get an autoshop to mix up a can of an exact match?

  • Mighty car mods have a video on YouTube of DIY alloy repair. Maybe check that out. The equipment and materials didn't look too expensive.
