WhatsApp: Can it be used overseas (without roaming)?

I am going overseas (to different countries). Will WhatsApp be useable using just Wifi and my current local Aussie simcard (ie I do not have roaming and will not using any other simcard).
If not which apps to use that would be similar to Whatapps (I will be just using hotel free wifi)?

        Can confirm it works

  • Yes. WhatsApp will work overseas (with your current SIM) if you want to use over the Wi-Fi.

Actually works with any SIM, provided you do not reactivate whatsapp.

Whatsapp essentially marks your current phone as the receipient for any msgs going to your number, even if another SIM is inserted (provide you do not reset whatsapp)

    will even work:
    1) without your existing SIM (ie, no SIM, just using WiFi)
    2) with a foreign SIM - but do not choose the option to change WhatsApp account when it detects the changed SIM card.

[i have done both of these]

  • Yes it will work. Done this pretty much everytime I travel.

  • Yeah it'll work over wifi, you'll be charged roaming if you use your data depending on your plan. I've even installed whatsapp on tablets using spare phones for the phone number verification. They only use your phone number as a user name it's not actually linked in another way. Like if you install whatsapp and then in the future you have to change your number, whatsapp will still work; although unless you update the number people wont be able to see that you have whatsapp installed with your new number, if you make new contacts or whatever.

I hope that makes sense, I'm horrible at explaining things.

It doesnt even require your Aussie' Sim.

  • Thank you guys. My problem solved.

  • Yes on Wifi

  • Yes of course.

You might want to consider a Chat Sim, looks like it has changed since I last looked at it when it was called WhatSim, but I think it is still a sim card that gives you unlimited whatsapp (and now others too) messaging for 10 EURO!
