If you are thinking of doing that, if you haven't already you should read all about cards with no overseas transaction fee

Unless you really get a crazy good price, personally I would just buy it here, take it with, get the GST back as part of the tourist refund scheme and then have an Australian warranty etc. Otherwise if you have a problem with the laptop later, what do you do?

  • It's better to buy it here, 2 years warranty.

    What laptop are you after?
Also Why does everyone think things are cheaper over there? They just aren't at the moment…

Many people who have never been to the US don't understand that tax isn't included in US prices so by the time you add tax you end up saving about $50. An extra $50 to buy here with a Australian warranty and an Australian charger is worth it IMO.

The exchange rate is also TERRIBLE at the moment so unless you find some amazing deal on Amazon or something there is 0 point buying it over there. If you went about a year ago the dollar was great and everything was cheaper but now it isn't worth it.
You'll need an adapter for the charger and you will probably have no warranty in Australia.

Also if you buy it there add 6-7% tax depending on where you are going.

Buy it here and do the TRS.

  • I had a look at laptop finders, and none of them let you configure for the kind or size of HDD, which is kind of surprising. But searching for "256gb ssd" on MSY showed that the cheapest is $1389. It's a Lenovo Yoga, which is great, but at that price you'd best drop to 128GB. There's one for $899 there, getting close to your price after the TRS. Of course, there are other websites to look, but I'd say your prices and specs are a bit unrealistic.

  • Thanks for the suggestions guys. i guess i'll just look at laptops here. I compared a few prices and they are not that great. TRS makes it at par with US prices.
