Hyundai I30 or Kia Cerato

Hello everyone,

I am looking to buy a new/demo hatchback and need some advice.

I had decided on a 2014 Hyundai I30 Trophy or SE as they are now calling them, which in SA I can't get under $20,000 if I'm lucky. The problem is, the dealers are not helpful, won't give discounts, won't add anything on and are basically being very hard to deal with! The last one wasted an hour of my time getting me to fill in and sign a contract only to take it to the manager who said they wouldn't do it for that price. Left very disappointed….
I had previously purchased a brand new Mazda 3 and the difference between these dealerships is chalk and cheese..

So I've started looking at the Kia Cerato S YD 2015 model which I can get brand new for less than this, but I don't know anyone who has a Kia and to be honest don't know much about them.
The 7 year warranty is a big bonus - but is the build quality the same as the Hyundai? There is also a 2nd hand private 2013 model for sale ATM for $14,500 which has only done 19,500km and has tinted windows and a few extras.. this may also be a good buy?

Any help would be appreciated as it's starting to do my head in!

Thanks,
Deb

  • Hi Deb. For what it's worth, Kia & Hyundai have the same parent company and share the same R&D group. There's an interesting discussion over at Whirlpool that may help. Good luck :)

  • but I don't know anyone who has a Kia and to be honest don't know much about them.

Kia is 34% owned by Hyundai. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kia_Motors)

" Beneath the skin, Cerato is closely related to the extremely popular Hyundai i30.
Its mechanical configuration and general presentation are very similar." RACV Road Test

  • I had a similar issue with a Mazda dealer in Sydney - twice (although others reported a great sales experience). In both cases, my wife and I wanted a Mazda and had a specific model in mind.. And in both cases we went to dealers up the road and bought an alternative later in the day.

The thing is - buying a car gets them a chunk of sale and nearly guaranteed aftermarket revenue for the next few years. If their pre-sales attitude is poor, imagine what their post-sales attitude is like when it comes to warranty and the such.

  • Deb,I can't comment on the hatchbacks, as never drove one

I do own a 2015 kia Cerato sedan after driving a Hyundai Elantra for 2 weeks ,
both are excellent cars ,comfortable [im 6'3"] great on fuel, quiet & ride well
    Kia's warranty -hard to top

    i'd recommend either company ,

    good luck dealing

You realise these people are paid on commissions? It's in their best interests not to offer a discount, throw anything in etc, and try to get you to buy the car for full price, or the advertised price. The salesperson that committed you to sign an offer would've been just trying to narrow you down and earn your business, trying to get a commitment out of you. It's at that stage that you should be at, and I'm surprised you're still deciding between vehicles, but you're surprised that they're not offering discounts straight up.

Once you've decided exactly which vehicle you want to buy, then start the negotiation process, no earlier! Saying to the salesperson that you're still not decided, but asking 'whats your best price' or 'what will you throw in', then no surprise they're not willing to offer anything.

So, to summarise, narrow down to 1 vehicle, then put an offer in writing at the special price of where you wanna be, with whatever accessories included. Just be reasonable, the small-medium car markets don't have margins in them currently, and they'll likely have less than $1k margin to work with.

  • Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

Spackbace, I had decided on the car, went in with the decision to buy the car, cash money ready to go. After agreeing with the salesperson on what I wanted (inclusions, price, and even down to the colour) and signing a contract, is it unreasonable that I left very disheartened with the process? At no time did the salesperson suggest that the deal would not be done that day. And after weeks of looking, I was extremely disappointed.

Hence, now looking at the Kia Ceratos. Before I go down the track of dealing, I would just like to know if they are as good/better than the Hyundais, and to get some feedback.

    • At no time did the salesperson suggest that the deal would not be done that day.

Sorry to hear :/ Personally I would've been saying from the start that it was an offer to put to Management, no guarantees etc. At the very least there should've been a counter-offer as well.

  • Yep at no time was I told that it wasn't a done deal, and no counter offer either. It was extremely disappointing. In fact, I rang the following day and asked to speak to the manager, and very calmly and politely said that I was disappointed, and that I thought they might like some feedback. I told him that from a customer service point of view it was not a positive experience. He pretty much said that he wasn't interested!

I am just so shocked in the difference of my new car buying experience from my last time with Mazda, who couldn't do enough for me and it was an enjoyable process. Obviously Hyundai are doing pretty well for themselves here in Adelaide to be able to turn customers away.

Welcome to the world of car dealers. Every car i have bought has mostly been a negative one. Usually once money is exchanged. Your method of trying to get some understanding by reporting it, i get but they don't want to know because they don't care. Don't waste your time or money on people with terrible customer service. It will just get worse. Coincidence perhaps but my best experience was with a Mazda dealer too.

The 7 year warranty is a big bonus

    Kia wins

but is the build quality the same as the Hyundai

    It's better.

  • I would and will still buy Made In Japan

    Corolla
    Lancer
    Mazda3

    • Yeah that's awesome if you got a lot more money.

      i30 for $19,990

      cerato for even less

Lancers are garbage… good luck buying a car that has a platform thats 10yrs old, shit brand, shit dealer network

      Corolla zzzz

I like the Mazda 3 but the only one I like is the SP25 with the 2.5 motor and that's like at least another $7,500 away from an i30.

^it's not about what you like. But what the OP might like

        • And I agree with the OP, go the koreans under $20k.

I'd go the cerato simply because of the warranty.

    • Post was last replied to in August last year!

      Nice threadmine!

      • Like good wine, takes time……
