The Kraken (Rum) $48.80 @ Dan Murphy's

970

To mark International Rum Day (Yo ho ho)
1st Choice has The Kraken Rum for $49/bottle, so Dan Murphys has price beat it for $48.90.

For those who have never had the pleasure, it's one of the tastiest rums you can (now) get under $50.
It's got a lovely toffee, nut & even a bit of a kahlua flavour.
No need for a mixer, this stuff is as smooth as a cabin boy's bottom. Just have it neat with a cube or two of ice.

I saw at Sydney Duty Free for $61 for a 1 litre bottle ($42.70/700ml) so it's a pretty good price.
I believe it's usually around the $60 mark in Dan/1st Choice.

So pop a parrot on your shoulder, raise the jolly roger flag, drop your pants & drink to International rum day Arrrrr me hearties.

I was just in the USA recently and as I was looking for some stuff to bring back (from Rite Aid, not the monopoly duty free stores in the airport), I saw that they were selling this for $US15, which after adding sales tax is still half the price of this. Is this rum really that good?
Although over there I think rum is seen as an inferior product to bourbon/whiskey, whereas they seem to occupy the same market here.

    • +2

This is a spiced rum. It is very different to Bundy etc and bourbon/whiskey. More like a liqueur.

    • +2

      everything's cheaper in US

      • +3

        It's also a US product.

Probably makes the best dark and stormy you'll ever experience…

Enjoyed neat but more so in a mixer.. Especially with Bundaberg Ginger beer and a lime twist!

As for duty free pricing, that's not a marker for anything really. Walmart had Jim Beam white label for $9 (Orange County CA) when I was there last and a litre of Makers Mark was not quite $19.. U.S booze prices are always pretty cheap, especially at supermarkets.

Soft drinks by the slab are super cheap too.. 30 cans of 7UP is like $7, less on coupon days. A slab of water (600ml) can be as low as $4 for 24 bottles.

Unlike here, its a very competitive market over our duopoly so prices reflect competition… Wages and cost of living are also different. I can't remember if California has sales tax on booze or not.. I'm pretty sure there isnt any, could be wrong.

Bought a Slab of coke for $5 from Walmart few weeks ago. 24 cans.

Woolworths/Coles rip us to the heavens

    • +2

There would be $22 in excise rates on Kraken, plus you have GST. Not sure about the US, but here all spirits are $$$$.

You know adding any kind of citrus to Bundaberg Ginger beer creates a toxic effect in some people ? Specifically reacting with preservatives 211, 223.

Preservative 223: hayfever, suspected respiratory, kidney and immunotoxicity. Prohibited in foods for infants.
Preservative 211: asthma, headaches, skin irritations, stomach upsets.

      I wouldnt touch the stuff.

argh this stuff is deadly, drink with caution! but amazing :)

  • +1

This stuffs fantastic. Recently been getting into the spiced rums. Only tried Captain Morgans dark rum (their spiced gold is my go to when I'm feeling cheap) and The Kraken so far. Can anyone recommend some other good ones to try?

    • +2

I personally enjoy Captain Morgan black spiced rum and Sailor Jerry

      • Yeah, I meant black spiced when I said dark rum (yet to try their dark rum, whoops). It's quite nice for the price; only $4 more than spiced gold at Dans. I'll certainly try out Sailor Jerry though.

        • Ahh yeah that dark rum isn't that special. Haven't had it in a long time but I remember it being pretty sharp, although I think it had a nice molasses flavor.

    • +2

Chairman's reserve, best spiced rum you can get in Australia, although I think I prefer it because it's a little less sweet.

You sir know a good rum!

    • +1

Give Rebellion Bay spiced rum a go. Very tasty stuff.

    • +1 for Captain Morgan and Sailor Jerry. On a different note, Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum.

    • +2

Rebellion Bay, Mount Gay, Appleton Estate are all good.
Sailor Jerry too (recently got 3 bottles duty free, almost finished the 2nd), but I find it a little sweeter than I prefer.
I'm not a fan of Capt Morgan (too syrupy for my taste) or the new Bundy Spiced.

    • +1

Ron Zacapa is my favourite. It isn't sickly sweet like The Kraken.

    • +1

Appleton Estate Extra 12yo - imho, it's worth paying the extra $10 for over the Kracken. This is hands down the best rum <$60 (when on sale) if you drink dark rums neat.

For the next level above this I would personally recommend the Ron Zacapa Centenario 23. It's a bit more full bodied, smoother and has slightly richer lingering finish. $84.90 is usually the lowest price Dan's will sell it for so this is when I stock up for more. Whilst it is better than the Appleton, the difference is slight and it's up to you if you think it would be worth the extra $25.

Being a single malt whisky drinker for the last 10 years, I have found that over the last 5 years the quality of whiskies has been going downhill due to the popularity and demand whilst rum seems better quality for the pricepoint. Or maybe I just got bored of whiskies and it's all psychological. But if you're a whisky drinker definitely start checking out dark rums. I've really been enjoying my dark rum adventures.

Only problem is that we don't have the a very large selection of rums to choose from here. I'm so glad DMs have increased the range of rums to make them easily available. And finally they have the Havana Club Seleccion de Maestros! I swear nicks.com.au have been selling Havana Clubs higher end rums for the last decade and were the only place outside of independent bottleshops (which had ridiculous markups) where you could get it.

    • Ron de Jeremy Spiced Rum (yep, that guy) is pretty darn good! I'm yet to try some of the other recommendations outside of The Kraken, Sailor Jerry and another I can't remember the name of - will have a look this weekend!
