I want a smart tv box for the lounge tv,
either via wifi or plugged direct into nbn modern which is next to it,
prefer without computer use,

Can I run chromecast direct via wifi without a computer ?
Chromecast relies on something like a phone or tablet as like a remote to tell it what to show.
Which is fine because everyone has a phone and honestly its easier than having another remote around the place.
there is a device available on ebay from china of course, which plugs into your hdmi port and acts as a smart tv module. do a few searches and you will find it, it does have wifi built into it. Though this is not as common as it used to be a few years back. Nowadays you find Andriod TV which is pretty much an android on your tv for about $60. They are tiny, compact and plus into your tv using hdmi.
