Where to buy Expanded Polystyrene / Styrofoam boards?

Hiya, I'm trying to buy some styrofoam boards that are flat and about 1 - 3 cm thick. X and Y dimensions don't matter as much as I'm cutting it into broad strips but 40 x 60 cm or larger would be ideal.

Any tips on where to grab something like this for cheap? I've already checked Ebay and Amazon. Thanks.

You could try an appliance store for free styrafoam. Places like Radio Rentals, Harvey Norman etc throw heaps of it out. If that the correct type of foam you're after.

  • Solid or flexible?
Art supplies shops like Eckersley's or Dean's Art have them.

    • Yeah the arts supplies places are a ripoff from what I see (unless I'm missing something which is quite possible).

      • Not missing anything, they are expensive. I misread your post, thinking you're looking for 1-3mm thick stereofoam (while you said 1-3cm) so disregard my comment.

now a days when slabs are being poured for new houses they often use large blocks of Styrofoam. approx 1m X 80cms X 80cms.

buy some of that and then make yourself a Styrofoam cutter

  • Unsure if I'm a little late but you could try your luck at a waste/recycling center. We have a local 'waste transfer facility' where people pay to recycle their polystyrene/styrofoam. If you asked nicely I'm sure you could get some from there but I'm not sure about what type of bubble you would get in those.
