(NSW) Sydney to NewCastle train, which is true price? $5.81 or $25.48?

transportnsw.info says:

09:15 Central Station, Platform 9, Sydney

Central Coast & Newcastle Line
Towards Newcastle via Strathfield

11:41 Broadmeadow Station, Platform 2, Broadmeadow

OPAL: $5.81

bookings.nswtrainlink.info says:

Tue 09:30 to Tue 11:45, 2h 15m Direct

$25.48

I suspect maybe both are true prices:

  1. the 9:15AM train can be paid with OPAL at $5.81
  2. the 9:30AM train costs $25.48 and can't be paid with OPAL.

The information is clear, only that the difference is too big. Is it true? I don't live in Sydney to tell.

Thanks:)

The $25.48 figure is for a booked interstate TrainLink (formerly CountryLink) service and the $5.81 figure is for the intercity service with no booked seats.

Note you will also be able to buy a single paper ticket still in Newcastle for around $6 if you don't have an opal card.
The intercity service is mildly better, but not $20 better.

  • Thanks, all clear, very helpful. I think mskeggs must have meant that "TrainLink service is mildly better, but not $20 better", if victorwilson is right that intercity is the cheaper one.

    • D'oh.
Yes. I blame the constant rebranding of NSW transport services. The intercity is cheaper, it is an electric train that runs Newcastle to Sydney with amenities slightly above a suburban train. The Trainlink/CountryLink is a diesel engine which runs Brisbane <-> Sydney with stops along the north coast. It has 2 classes of travel with booked seats and a dining car.
