Community Services Work - Insights and Guidance on Finding Work

Hello all!

After studying a bachelor of business and spending 5 years in the international shipping sector, I decided to make a considerable career change - after experiencing the 'fun' that is a major corporate restructure. As like what's happening across the corporate world, many of our jobs were outsourced to overseas countries such as Thailand, India and Philippines. Having been fed up with these challenges and unsustainable job prospects in the corporate business sector, I decided to start to study a Diploma in Community services work.

I was volunteering with my local council with the youth services team and after having experienced by work matters, decided to build upon these experiences into a new career. Especially for the fact that the industry makes up the essential services area and won't experience outsourcing.

I'm still currently studying my Diploma, but would like to I guess have some general insights from those who have worked or are working in the community work sector about:
- recommendations of employers you find are good to work for
- job agencies / recruitment (who work within this sector)
- ways of how you developed in the sector.

For myself, I'm looking to develop in the community development, community engagement, youth work, outreach and other (Not seeking disability or drugs/alcohol work). I still have yet to commence my work placement which is required of my course, so this is why I'm asking, so I can have a better idea of the industry.

Look forward to hearing your feedback.

Regards

Anthony
