Good Deal? US$99 delivered for MT6795 octacore, dual sim, 5.5inch, 32GB, 4G, 20mp cam, Android 5.1, 2 batteries and case

After a few drinks I jumped on this deal on indiegogo, sobered up a bit, think it is an amazing deal at $US99 delivered, or a great deal in the next bracket US$199 but what do others think?

US$99 delivered for MT6795 octacore, dual sim, 5.5 inch, 32gb, 4G, 20mp cam, android 5.1, 2 batteries and case.

Importantly through an Australian local company. Delivery not until December tho?

Pain in the ass to quote details as campaign is all shown in images.

I reckon I'm on to a winner, but don't know too much on the current state on mobiles.

No way would I take a chance on it. There can be huge delays with these campaigns, and some just don't end up making it at all.

Redmi Note 2 is what I'd get now to be a comparable phone. Maybe there might be some successor/rival to it in a few months time.

LOL at the invites being valued at $35 each.

These Chinese phones have pretty high megapixel cameras but are they actually any good? The cameras I mean. On the surface 20MP is very high but I have a feeling another aspect of the camera is being skimped on.

    • Yep, the camera could be crap, so could the display and battery, despite their specs on paper.

Edit: It does list more detailed specs halfway down the page and video/photo samples https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/maxphone-more-tablet-more…

    • Depends what sensor they use; this phone uses the IMX220 Exmor RS the same sensor as the iphone 6 range and Sony Xperia Z3

Rebranded elephone p7000 with modified specs.
One thing to remember though, is that the camera sensor from the spec sheet is not always believable, many vendors use the excuse of component running out to justify them changing the sensor, usually to an Omnivision one due to their lower prices.

    • Thanks, closest comparison i have found so far. Fair few difference tho, better cpu, camera, battery, sensors, Network coverage, more storage. And a local warranty, which is important i think.

      • Lol, local warranty from a indiegogo campaign.

Australian store, Australian company, Australian Consumer Law.

Easy returns and easy enough for me to knock on the door of this one.

        • @Dlite:

          Australian company

Who is the Australian company? I couldn't find a company name, ABN, or any identifying info on their website, or from a quick check of the Australian Business Register and ASIC.

        • @Dlite:

they (digitalandroid) state that their service centre is located in nsw au. however, their jurisdiction is based in hk.

  • Post-campaign it must be a truly tough sell as the device[w OS5.1] enters into speculative 700AUD+~territory. 2016, might as well check the proposed LG 5.

*known. updates. 20 mega pixel/Dual. Full Aus 4G, infrared ctrl. Screen, battery, SoT +more.

The hyped upSensor worth maybe 6 bucks? Only 2 bucks or so on the more effective avail omnivision/Samsung_Xiaomi2. Due soon for many Aus. user reviews.

    • I think we all know it's local price won't go above A$400-$450

      • Any idea who the Australian company is? Perhaps a registered business name or ABN?

        • @whooah1979: They're reluctant to answer the question in the Indiegogo comments too. Plus the issue in their terms of service that you pointed out:

Our Legal Terms shall be treated as though it were executed and performed in Hong Kong, Hong Kong and shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Hong Kong, Hong Kong without regard to conflict of law principles. In addition, you agree to submit to the personal jurisdiction and venue of such courts.

Seems strange that a proudly Australian company feels they need to hide their identity.

Since 2007 digitalandroid.com has been at the forefront of manufacture and supply of the latest Android devices …
We are a 100% Australian founded company and I am 100% Australian and it cannot get more Aussie than that.

  • absoluty crazy specs even for $199

also i'm not as picky as you guys… if the camera is 100% spot on, i can forgive it as everything else makes up for it

however their campaign model is awful

so 99 people get a smashing deal

then 199 people get a pretty decent deal too

then everyone else gets RRP? and their model involves around getting other people (ie. suckers) to sign up with their 'pledge'…. this doesnt sound so good, in fact it smells like a pyramid

MAXPHONE is also a horrible name but at least they dont splash it about everywhere on the phone

also I think this being a china phone, how quick do you think clones of this will be out?

    • also i'm not as picky as you guys

Because it seems to good to be true, that they can make less than 400 phones with those specs for that price.

how quick do you think clones of this will be out?

Total guess, but I doubt that this will even be out.

      • they're not making a phone for $199

the std. price of the phone is $349

all the people who kicked in $99 or $199 are risking their money… aka. its a pyramid

i could be pessimistic but there's a possibility that this phone actually makes it to peoples' hands

        • Yea I saw the prices.

They say they only need USD $100,000 and with that they can make 379 phones. I find that hard to believe with the specs they have listed for a startup company. I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just seems very unlikely.

By the time it materializes,if it materializes(these things always have delays), it's likely Xiaomi or Huawei would have made something similar.

        • @ozhunter:
379 phones seems less than what they can actually make though, as it means the manufacturing cost would be ~$264/phone. (Not sure if they need any marketing budget, my guess is not)

A generic budget phone wouldn't be that expensive to make. Mediatek cpu is cheaper than competitors as well.
$99 might be selling at a lost but probably not $199.

        • yeah but how many crowdfunded projects go bust

many people (apparently) will toss away $99 but not $199 it seems

it depends how much you want to trust these people

i am mad skeptical at this point because they could very well get funded and then fold up and be outside credit card and paypal refund time limits

this is a form of gambling/speculation

  • Is there a barrier why these often can have 800MHz, yet stop a 100mhz short of B28 below that? — In light of its importance to carrier aggregation, and ViLTE, and VoLTE and Australian users next year .. I wasn't expecting that.

Support of expansion storages and bonus swappable batteries however, are commendable things to have.

    • Most likely to save cost on the modem, so making sure what they have can be used by most parts of the world is the priority (1800mhz). To be fair, because so far B28/700mhz is only widely used in Australia and Taiwan, it's sort of understandable that it's not included. (Also because these two markets are relatively small, and 1800mhz is usable too)
