RAM upgrade for Sony Vaio laptop

Hi guys.

I'm not too sure if I should have posted this in here or 'Find me a bargain' but here goes…

Since I have gone with Windows 10, my trusty Sony SVT131A11M has slowed down a bit and prompted me to consider a RAM upgrade and possibly a new SSD too. I had a look on the crucial website and used their scanner tool and the maximum size module it suggested was 8GB of with the following module was the fastest….

8GB DDR3 PC3-14900 Unbuffered NON-EC 1.35V 1024 Meg x64

Anyone know where I can get this RAM in Oz?? Or, are there alternatives?

Cheers

  • I don't see how getting new RAM will speed up your computer unless you don't have enough of it. and if you're not using a SSD that would be your first priority.

    • It has a 'hybrid' drive, which is part normal disc and a portion SSD (I know, a so-so compromise) I will get an SSD and there are many, many deals on here for them but few on RAM.

Therefore, in this instance I am asking for advice on RAM. Anyway, my meagre 4GB doesn't seem up to the job….so I am looking for 8Gb.

  • +1

From what I have heard there is a few issues with Sony Vaio's and Windows 10 that could be causing your issues.

Sony suggest "Not to upgrade yet" http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/os10upgrade.pl

This article has a little more information: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2970741/computers/sony-vaio-o…

Having recently upgraded an old core 2 duo (4GB RAM) with a Sandisk SSD and upgraded to windows 10 64bit, you are definately on the right path to getting more out of your laptop.

If your Vaio has 4GB ram already, you might find the SSD is the better bang for buck upgrade edit and ensure you are running 64bit to use all the exisiting RAM

    • Thanks for the link. Oh well, it's my own fault! The only real issues I experienced was with the Synaptics touchpad driver, which caused lock-ups on startup. I deleted the driver, got the latest version and all is now good…..but the PC, as I said, is definitely slower but it needed some RAM/SSD upgrades anyway.
