  • How old is he that he needs a tablet?

  • We have those tablets at our local KMart (Vic) and they're $25.

You asked for inputs/recommendations.. so here's my take:

    Consideration Points:
Screen (Quality) afterall this is the main thing you are using..
Memory Capacity (512MB, 1GB or higher?)
Storage Capacity (including ability to use storage Cards)
Sound (is the on-board speaker capable)
Build quality (any rough edges, dodgy buttons or flimsy backing?)
Cameras (if required, this might jump up the order)
    Connectors (standard micro/mini usb only)
GPS (probably not for kids use, but using it for maps/directions might be required).
    Ability to source cases/screen protectors

    1. The <50$ ultra cheapy.. most (if not all) will be 512MB RAM, which makes anything other than basic media and games quite a painful experience. Battery life is usually poor, sound is terrible and the screens are practically unusable. This being said, if you have a kid that drops things, or even if you're nervous about them having an expensive device at their age then these can still be a reasonable choice. Buy it from a store here and you get warranty too..

    2. The 50$-100$ mark
Shop hard, research and you can find discounted australian stock on special, or end-of-life.. these would be with 1GB RAM (pretty much the minimum) and reasonable screens. I'd expect a "known computer brand" at this price bracket..

    Here's a basic example from Officeworks: http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-tab-…

Lenovo Tab 2 A7-10 7" Tablet for $97 (instock at Guildford or Northmead stores it seems).

I'm not covering over $100 in this chat, but my advice would be to get a branded tablet with 1GB and make sure the kid is supervised when using it.
