Harvey Norman, Domayne or Joyce Mayne

Hi,
In general does anyone know if there are major price differences between these three stores?

I've been looking at their 33 month interest free deal. Looking at
TV, lounge and maybe a bed. I assume that there prices are higher than other discount stores?

Thanks.

  • well they are all owned bu Gerry Harvey and the 33 month interest free terms have to be managed very carefully otherwise you will pay big time at the end. See the wiki here

And you can always find they will negotiate or match prices if you are not buying on terms, so guess that tells you something

    • Thanks ozpete.

I used a similar Harvey Norman deal years ago. It was interest free and no repayments. I had the cash to buy outright so I put the money in a Term Deposit and then paid the full amount out before the end of the IF period. But I do remember talking to the sales guy and him saying that the majority of people don't pay the thing off and end up paying big$ to GE.

So you're saying that they won't negotiate on prices when you buy using interest free terms? I wouldn't have thought it mattered to them as I thought they'd still get their money from GE?

      • I think once they find out you want to put in on finance your bargaining position is weakened. I would ask what deal they can do for you on your items and then ask if they will put it on finance when you get your figure. If you are having trouble go to another store if you have time.

There could be a cost to HN to do finance, at least that is what a sales person told me. However, he would not knock off anything for cash and was going to give me the same price whether I paid cash or used finance?!? I was trying to use the fact that it cost them money (his argument) to put me on finance to reduce the cost of the goods as I was paying cash. He stated he could not discriminate. I just went elsewhere.

I personally would not buy anything from harvey norman or any of it's stores. They are basically smaller stores within a single store name, this causes so many problems.
They thrive on ingorant customers who dont know better and its really sad.

Yeh, i bought a new laptop from JB today, $1400 quoted by them, Harvey Norman tried saying that $1599 was the best possible price (for cash), after i told them i had a quote for the same model number, the best price suddenly dropped significantly. They do just thrive on ignorant customers, or those whom don't know any better.
