Best Value Camera for Family

Hi there,

I'm looking at investing in a camera for capturing decent photos of my family, starting with a holiday in a couple of weeks.

Not after anything too flashy or fiddly (no plans to get into photography as a hobby). Just want something that captures the little details (eyes etc) in a way my Samsung S5 doesn't.

First question people ask will always be budget. I imagine I would be comfortable enough with $500 but I'm genuinely focused on value over cost - I'll spend $1k if it's worth the extra. Obviously would love someone to tell me I'll get the same outcome from a $200 camera if I'm not into twiddling with complex settings.

sony rx100 mk 2 i think is good bang for bunk. Lets you (or any one) play with manual settings if you choose, otherwise takes good auto pics.

  • Canon Powershot S110. Compact, easy to use, yet allows for manual settings and takes wonderful photos.

Yeap, it's old, introduced in 2012 but still kicks butt.

  • Any of the Sony RX 100 series are great cameras for what you pay . Look at what rental companies use - generally these for outdoor and the Canon D20/D30 for underwater.
