Tech Help - Is There Such a Thing as ADSL2+ Filter? and if So, Is It Faster Than ADSL

Hi all.
I have adsl2+ at home (TPG).
just checked all my filters and they all say adsl.
Is there such a thing as adsl2+ filters.
The reason I ask is that my speed only gets to max 220 kbps
Thanks

  • Hi, no there is no such thing as ADSL2 filters. ADSL2 is simply the maximum speed you will receive from your nearest exchange. The line-filter simply just filters out the internet frequencies (ADSL) so that you can use a regular telephone on the phone line.
your maximum speed will not be affected by the filter you are using.

Actually there is such thing as an ADSL2+ compatible filter and it most likely will make a difference on an ADSL2+ connection.

And yes, using an ADSL1 filter on an ADSL2+ connection may indirectly affect throughput, since ADSL1 filters are not designed to filter the higher bandwidths that are transmitted from the DSLAM. In simple terms, a large chunk of the ADSL2+ signals will not get filtered and will reach the equipments in the premise that you are trying to filter. This causes noise on your local loop, which leads to an increase in cross-interference between your ADSL and phone signals, and will likely increase attenuation. Typical problems that you will have with this is dropouts of your ADSL2+ connection (an illusion of this perceived from your computer is significant drop in throughput) and/or fluctuating sync rates.

I completely second neil's suggestion. The best way to test if filtering is affecting your speed issues is to do a complete line isolation and plug your modem directly into the phone socket without any filters.

You may have a broken filter. Best to do an isolation test, unplugging all phones, faxes, etc except for the modem/router. If speeds are the same then it's not the filters.

Can I suggest to you ask this same question at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au because your ISP is most likely going to be hanging out there with a lot of other internet users - whom are quite savvy too - that can help you not only improve your speed but explain to you why and how to improve it. With that said, the advice above is good too but you'll be able to post to the forum and search a large body of knowledge which will definately include your situation as well. Cheers.

  • thanks all for your advice and info. I will run isolation test and check whirlpool also :)
