Buying a New Washing Machine. What Are The Most Important Things I Should Consider?

Our current washing machine has finally given up the ghost and it is time to get a replacement. There is three people who will be using it and it will probably only be used for average washes. That is, we don't have anyone in the house who works in heavy industry or particularly dirty jobs so it doesn't need to have exceptional power or settings to deal with stuff like that.

I don't want to spend too far north of $1k. Top loader is probably preferred unless there is a particularly compelling reason to get a front loader.

Thanks. :)

  • why do you prefer top loader?

    • Just always had one. I am willing to get a FL if it out performs a TL in some important way.

      • I find tissues left in a FL end up more or less intact after a cycle whereas the TL i use, you would find tissue fragments throughout the entire load.
If your one to forget tissues in our pockets then that may make a difference.

  • The most important thing is get one that fits in the spot you have. We have a front loader that sits at cupboard height so it is easy to put clothes in and out and we have sorting baskets underneath. They use less water but the downsides are the towels are scratchy 'cause they over wring them and you can't really add anything else after you start the cycle.

  • Wasnt a referral link.. Just link to the Swash Machine :P

  • If want a new house get a samsung

Yeah. Just make sure that you have good insurance because Samsung will ignore your requests for assistance.

Timer delay. Load the clothes in at night then they are washed and ready to hang out or put in the drier as soon as you wake up or ready for when you get home from work.
Top loader - most have an economical 30min wash setting for regular washes. 1 hour for more intensive loads. Most of the other settings are for bling.
Hi speed spin - 1200 rpm saves drying time.
    Direct drive motor.
    Get extended warranty
We got 14 years out of our last LG FL and it was only the motor that stopped it. replacement motor was over $500 so replaced it with current LG .
Use liquid detergent so it dissolves quicker into the water. Add a few drops of Eucalyptus Oil as a disinfectant. (or there is a Eucalyptus liquid woolwash)
    Rarely use warm/hot water

Got a good deal from JB hifi (24/4/15 - $750)

    • +1 time delay!!
Also, the current machine I have allow me to modify the temperature, the number of rinse and spin power. I think that's pretty good!

  • Front loaders are more efficient at actually cleaning the clothes and use less water. Most machines have a timer for time delay. I agree with try2behelpful that the space is very important as well. It must fit in the space allocated for it. The front loader can be under a bench top for sorting clothes or the benchtop could support a dryer above it. When you have decided on front or top loader, look at Choice Magazine for free at your local library for the reviews. Our last machine was an LG, and our current machine is AEG and it is expected to last a very long time. Use liquid detergent and cold wash, and the soft capsules for timer wash. The capsules look like little pillows with liquid detergent inside.

  • LG & top loader.
When installing it use a spirit level to ensure it is sitting right.

  • If you have lots of waterproof linen or other waterproof items be very careful which washing machine you choose.

We recently purchased a Samsung 10kg top loader. It had a sticker on the machine and a note in the manual that it couldn't be used for "waterproof mats, seats or clothing". Linen and Bedding doesn't fall into any of the categories of mats, seats or clothing so we thought it would be okay for all our single and queen size waterproof mattress protectors and quillt protectors. We decided to query the matter with Samsung and eventually they sent back the message that it wasn't suitable to wash the waterproof items we had. I have no idea why as they didn't give details or explanations as to the consequences to the linen and the washing machine if I put the waterproof linen through. All the items had machine washable on the washing instructions.
