Transfer $100 to Friend in Japan?

Hey guys, I'm wanting to transfer $100 to a friend who lives in Japan. I've never transferred money directly from my bank account before. What's the easiest way to do it?

Thanks for any help!

  • Are there any restrictions related to sending money to Japan I should know about?

  • Have you tried Google?

Paypal? Exchange rates and fees aren't the lowest but if it's a one-off transfer and only $100, it's probably the most simple way.

Transfers to a Japanese Paypal account and then to a Japanese bank account is bloody anal. I've done it before and there's a reason Ebay/Paypal aren't popular there. But yes I guess small sum is simple enough.

  • Western union money transfer

      No, don't!

Easiest is probably just to wire it via your bank to your friend's account.
It would be cheaper and vaguely more difficult to go via paypal.

If possible the cheapest/easiest way to "pay" them $100 is to pay for something they need up to that amount using a credit/debit card.

  • If your going to that effort to transfer overseas, at least make it more than $100. I'm sure they would appreciate it.

hahaha.. i was thinking the same thing!

      • 100 dollars is like petty cash in Japan - one day worth of spending money. At least should make it 500 hahah!

    paypal.

  • Transfer using a Citibank Plus Account. Their exchange rates are okay and there are no fees for international transfer.
It's a account/card worth getting anyway if you travel overseas.

  • Are they really your friend or some person you met online who needs some quick dollars?

  • Hey guys, thanks so much for the replies!

I just had another idea: Could I send a gift card valued at $100 from amazon.com? Does my friend need to have an amazon.com account and already be an amazon.com user?

You could just fly over to Japan, hand the money over and fly back home.

  • Does anyone have experience with using amazon?

Millions of people, it's the second biggest retailer in the world.

      • Thanks, but I mean in terms of buying gift cards?

I was just told by amazon.com to contact amazon.co.jp…

        • Amazon.com didn't let you buy it?

An Amazon.com gift card should be only able to be used on Amazon.com
Amazon.jp should only be to be used on Amazon.jp

      • after aliexpress.

  • Is there another way I can send a gift card or cheque?

    • By boat ⛵ ? Or glass bottle, or owl.

  • Thanks. So using an Amazon gift voucher is a decent way to send $100?
