Need Modem Router for Two Houses and 10 Users

Hi All,

I have a mate who has moved a couple of houses down in the same complex and we are trying to connect both houses on one modem/router.

I was wondering which modem/router will give us best speed plus not slow the internet down because the no of users/equipment is going up.

Thanks
Vik

  • That's a long cat6.

  • I'm trying to do it wirelessly with modem/router/extender. In my opinion a combination of few things will help.

  • +2

You can buy a cheap Wireless Router TP-Link Archer C7 or similar. For high-end, pick a Netgear Night Hawk version.

Connect it to your ADSL/Fibre modem via Ethernet/Gigabit port to utilize the bandwidth. You can set 2 SSIDs on the wireless router: 1 on 2.4 GHz (most devices see this SSID) and 1 on 5 GHz (only latest devices can see this SSID). All users will connect to this router wirelessly. You must choose a good location for this router where its signal covers both 2 houses.

If you live in Melbourne, I may give you a hand for configuration.

  • I think this will do the job. Thanks for the advice mate. BTW Im in Perth and thanks for the help again.

  • I'd look at ubiquiti products, with a separate modem (like jackdao recommends).

    • +1 Ubiquiti is some seriously high end stuff, although the cost is pretty damn high and doesn't always represent the best value for the average kind of user. The Uni-Pro is around $288 via Kogan and for that dosh you can buy 2 TP Link C7's.

      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/ubiquiti-uap-pro-unifi-pro-8021…

Would recommend Ubiquiti though if you plan to open a public Wifi and are expecting like 20+ devices connected at once and need it to cover a large area.

    • How far apart are these houses?
    • How many houses are in between?
    • Are you planning on having the router in one house and hoping devices in both houses will be able to connect to it?
    • Have you tried a wireless router yet to see if you can even pick up the SID in the "other" house?

If there is not much between the two houses you might have a chance depending on how far apart they are. If you have houses blocking direct line of sight between where the router is going to be and where the devices in the other house would be, you might find it hard to achieve a stable signal via just wireless solutions.

Your best bet would be to achieve the best possible line of sight between the router in house A and a wireless extender in house B but even then you are at the mercy of the elements between the two really…

  • 10 Users but will have about +/- 30 devices assuming everyone has a PC, Phone, Tablet (not even including the smart tv, xboxes, wireless printer, etc). People watches youtube on HD, mobile devices auto updates. Even with a 100mbit NBN, your internet will slow to a crawl during the night time when everyone is at home. I cant imagine the chaos with people shouting "hey can you guys stop using the internet for a bit, my porn video keeps buffering"….
