  • G'day there fellow OzBargainers :)

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience buying this bike & whether its worth the money.

Looks like good value for money but I'm really after something that's not going to give me headaches & that will stand the test of time.

I realize its by no means a top of the range.

But then in saying that is it still a quality bargain ?

    Cheers

Spec wise its pretty decent at that price…and worth the price.

Really depends on what you're going to use it for, if for actual mountain biking - than standing the test of time if something that doesn't exist.

I have the Reid road bike, and I say its a bargain to get such parts/components at this price.

Their website only have 1 size left, XL (height: 189-205cm)

    • Thanks heaps peoples I grabbed one :)

    • I second the above comment - it's good if you're actually going to take it off road. I don't know why people are so averse to buying road bikes, but I see people a lot of people commuting to work on full suspension mtbs and I just shake my head. When I see people chuck out bikes on kerbside collection day they're mostly mountain bikes too.

      • Do you recommend NOT getting this one if I am planning to just ride it on road?

        • If you are just trundling out to the shops or cruising around the parks then this bike will be fine. If you are planning to use it as a commuter, it is a little too heavy and over engineered for that purpose, as you don't need a suspension fork or disk brakes on the roads. The larger tyres also create more rolling resistance.

The riser bars on this bike will not be comfortable for lengthy commutes, Imo.

If you are content to change tyres every so often, go with a road bike. If you would prefer not to have to change tyres and tubes semi frequently I would go with a hybrid bike.

I am not bagging the bike as it is very good for the money, just saying that a mountain bike is meant to be used off road.

        • It will be hard to find a better commuter bike for this price, even adding on the cost of slicks and aero-bars.

This has much better parts than the Reid Condor, for example.

        • @manic: I would start off by getting rid of the sun tour xct fork myself, which is probably the weakest aspect of the bike. just getting rid of that would shave at least a kilo off the bike and make road biking much more pleasurable.

I agree that turfing the fork, putting flat tyres on and better bars would make this an acceptable road bike, but for that sort of time and effort there are better. Options out there.

        • @paizuri:

Anyone have a link to what they would consider a good value hybrid bike, even if not as good a deal as this MTB?

        • @paizuri: could you please recommend what would be some good options for a roadbike in this price range? Thank you.

        • +1

@mikeInside: YMMV, but I don't mind the Giant Cross City bikes as commuters ($450 at moment for the 14 model). Unfortunately youre still stuck with the handlebars, but all round if I had to commute a significant distance I would be happier doing it on this.

@kreagh: I don't mind some of the cheaper options that 99 sells. This alloy bike, for example, has Claris components, perfectly respectable and on par with Sora components as far as I am concerned. I have used the same Sora gear shifters on my bike for the past fifteen years, and they are still fine.

        • @paizuri:
          Cheers for the suggestion!

        • @paizuri: Thank you for your recommendation
