5 cents cheaper then 1st choice!

    • +4

Yup, another Dan's "we can't be bothered so we'll beat others' prices by 5-10c" 'special'.

Ditto for the Balvenie and other 1st choice legit specials.

      • So why is everyone upvoting it?

        • +3

Cashrewards, free shipping codes, MyDan loyalty bonuses or click and collect if available.

  • is this normal price…?

    • +2

? how am I suppose to know if it's a good deal then

    • +3

Why is this deal just for people who always buy it? Maybe he wanted to see how big a deal it is..

      • -2

haha that's my point. he's being a dumbass

      • +1

If you don't drink this top shelf whisky frequent enough to know the usual price, then the whisky is wasted on your peasant taste buds. Go back to your Johnny red! /s

        • +2

Wow, seems people are missing or ignoring the /s tag… here's an upvote!

        • @aoiro: Pardon my ignorance but what does a /s tag mean?

I usually go for 12-18 year-old single malt from Islay, the Highlands or Speyside. I have not tried Japanese whisky. What is it like compared to my usual dram? I would also like to know if at this price is it a bargain? For I could pay $20 more for a decent Scotch.

    • +1

wooo look at you fancy pants on your high horse sipping your single malt scotch.

      • +6

        Technically not scotch :p

        • +1

but I'm sure OP has this and different brands of scotch in his glass cabinet, together with his boxes of hand rolled Cuban cigars.

    • +1

      That sounds really pretentious.

    • on the contrary, those who are new into the whole whisky appreciation would love to get cheaper price of good whisky, in case they don't like it.

    • +1

sometimes people buy each other presents that they have no idea about

  • +3

These are the guys who won Whisky of the Year in 2014 with one of their top shelf labels; aka they know how to make whisky.

This one is one of their core ranges but has got some great reviews. Good price, thanks OP.

Their 12 year is exceptional.. I know any drink is a personal taste thing, but the Yamazaki is my favorite whisky

  • +1

Makes me want to travel japan and drink up. Whiskeys are damn cheaper there.

    • +22

would love to have you and this whisky for dinner.. mmm..

    • +1

Was there just last week with my mate, wandering the streets of Shinjuku at night sharing a wee bottle of 1200¥ single malt (conveniently dispensed into two large partymix ice cups, also purchased from the same convenience store), wondering why we were the only people wandering around drinking. Then we realised, there were no bins. Japan you need more bins. We were disgraceful, but the price was right.

      • there are no bins cause u take your rubbish with u! but if u get desperate they have recycle bins next to vending machines

    • +1

Yeah no joke you can buy Hibiki in hip-flasks from 7-11s for about 300-400 Yen…

      • I just came back from Japan and they were more like 1000 yen for hipflasks of Hibiki and Yamazaki. Still cheap though.

The Suntory 43 (not as good, but still decent whisky) was around 600 yen for a small bottle. So delicious.

    • Yep, paid around $35 for a bottle of this earlier this year in Japan.

  • +1

time to use that american express promotion I think

  • -2

    That's a lot for a non age statement whisky…

    • +2

      Nah.

  • The Yamazaki 12 is amazing, the 18 is heavenly. Got them from Japan duty free really cheap the last time we went there.
I haven't tried the distiller's reserve so I can't speak for the quality of it

  • I was going to ask what the saving was until I read the hidden elitist OP comment

    normally $89

    saving $18

    :)

    • +1

wow I didn't realise that stupud comment belongs to OP.

For comparison I paid just under $50 AUD for this bottle in Japan 2 weeks ago. Obviously the Australian tax rate on alcohol is higher also factoring into the price difference.

    • I pid $80 for a 12 yo hibiki last year, that was Dan's retail price at the time. Now it's over. Their prize winning put it up a hell of a lot here. Not that it matters, you can't find an 18 yamazaki anywhere anymore.

    • For $85 you could get a bottle of Hibiki 17 from a Japanese airport (got mine from Hokkaido a couple of years back), so definitely worth picking up a couple for the people going there.

      • Be aware for anyone planning to get whisky at Narita there is currently a shortage on whisky in Japan due to the recent popularity of a cartoon in Japan ! This thread of flyer talk goes into details http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/japan/1592354-haneda-narita-d…

I transited via Nartia terminal 2 on Tuesday and they only have the "limited edition" bottles of the likes of Hibiki, Yamazaki, Hakushu etc… Its the same whisky as in the regular bottle just at a massive mark up !

I was lucky to get the last botthe of 17 year Nikka malt whisy for 3500 yen (aprox $40AUD).

Reports are that you can still find the regular stuff outside of the airport though if you can do a bit of hunting.

        • Yes T3 is clean out also. Though I found it cheaper in normal bottle shops (some also out of stock).

        • Japanese supermarkets sell whiskies and they are much cheaper than duty free. You can find Scotch & Japanese whiskies for around $30 at 7-Elevens there that are sold for $70-$90 at Dan Murphy's.

    • Really? Only cost $35 in March this year.

  • This is one of the nicest drops ever made

  • How does this compare with the Yamazaki 12 year (which I think is fantastic)?

    • Not as good.

    Tastes motorbikey to me

        More kawazaki i thought

@nismo: Its a blended yamaha and kawasaki

  • There is not such thing as a particularly good single malt Jap. They are all damned good!

    Apologies to George Cowley.

  • One Suggestion if anybody travels near Kyoto on a trip, you can go on the Yamazaki distillery tour (free - call to book).

So many free samples after the tour (Interestingly they ask how are you getting there. Obviously to make sure there is no drink driving).

  • +3

This whisky is spiratual and deep

Sold. Nothing I like more than an intellectual conversation with someone… or some beverage.

    • +5

For relaxing times, make it… Suntory time.

      • Great movie reference!

        • Basically my favorite movie . I even stayed in the Tokyo Park Hyatt on my honeymoon !

  • I went to the Yamazaki Distillery tour couple of weeks ago. Get to taste the various whiskies they make there at the end. I recommend it if you're ever in Osaka. Tour cost around $10 though, use to be free once.

    • I did the tour feb this year and it was free… i guess there were too many people not buying stuff after the tour that they decided to add a price to it. Still quite reasonable given how good the service is and how much they give you to drink

  • +2

I can see a lot of posts from people acting like snobs. If a person would like to try this whisky for the first time or is only trying it cos its cheap, who cares?! Enjoy the smooth taste and share it with your fellow man.

  • I'm off to HK next month, and wondering if this would be cheaper Duty Free, anyone know?

    • Can't quote on prices exactly, but when I was in HK airport in Feb, our shitty Aud - USD (HKD is pegged off USD) didn't make the duty free that appealing. Don't see it being much better in the coming future either…

    • If you're flying direct from HK back to Oz, you wont be able to board the flight with any liquid, including duty free liquor.

      • I'm not sure about HK airport, but in KL you can still buy at airport. You will not be able to take immediately after purchase. But they will wait at the gate and hand it over. Might wanna check if thats the same in HK.

        • Oh ok.. thanks for the info.

Yes, a quick Google has confirmed this!

Dang.. was looking at restocking a few drops on this trip, looks like I'll have to resort to getting them in Melb on the return.

        • Not sure about KL & HK but duty free @ SG Changi Airport does not stock any Japanese whisky.

        • @ltwo:

I had a quick look at KL on the way back ealier in the year and did not see any Suntori whisky :( and had to settle for some Scotch instead and they were that much cheaper than here. Just wait for Dan Murphy's sale like this one nd get them :)~

      • I found this out as well . They even have a search area on the gangway before entering the plane . A couple of people had full bottles taken off them .

Does anyone know why this is the case from HK but not other places? The ironic thing was I could buy alcohol on board from Cathay Pacific duty free !

    • If you board an aircraft from Hong Kong or Ho Chi Minh City heading for Australia, you are not allowed to carry duty-free liquor in your carry-ons.

  • Thanks. I can't get enough of JP whiskys. Last trip i maxed out my free duty limit of 3 ppl. Just bought 2 bottles on this deal with Cash Rewards and Entertainment Book Gift Card. Thats another 11% discount =)

    • entertainment book!? didnt know they have DM in there dammit

      • Yep…buy the eWish giftcards (5% discount). Then use it at DM checkout.

        • wow nice.. I should buy one for caltex

        • @28kb:
Convert to physical wish card first. Not all Woolies Caltex's accept eGift cards.

        • @cymon:

So is the process to convert just buy something at Woolies and ask for the balance of the card to be put on a physical card ?

        • @twitch1979:
There are mixed reports but majority of people, including myself, have purchased wish cards using eGift cards to pay for them. I did 2x $500 cards last week. You just need a checkout chick that knows what they are doing. Apparently it's as easy as scanning the wish card and choosing eGift card as payment method.

        • @cymon: Thanks, I will give this a try.

  • While I am a lover of Yamazaki, I doubt whether this NAS worth this much.

I will found out in 2 weeks as I will visit their factory in Osaka.

  • Thanks OP. First time trying Japanese Whisky so really looking forward to it!!

  • what or how spiritual and deep whiskey taste like ? Can a shallow atheist enjoy it ?

    • +1

I know plenty of atheists who enjoy a good whiskey, but they're not the shallow kind.

    • You can be a godless atheist heathen and still appreciate the spiritual side of life… and whiskey.

  • Thanks OP. Looks like I left it too late, none available.

    • Essendon fields showing 3 for me, and still available for delivery.

      • Thanks dude, my local actually had 3 bottles on the shelf (even though showing no stock online) it was labelled at $80 something but scanned at $70.95

  • For people that have missed out, you can try 1stchoice https://www.1stchoice.com.au/Spirits/yamazaki-distillers-res…

  • I really can't wait till the next Japanese whisky goes on sale!

    I'm loving this Yamazaki.
