USB Drive slower than expected

Hey guys, I recently bought a USB 3.0 drive from a deal posted here and I'm disappointed with the speed results.
I am getting between 15 and 50 MBps, highest I've gotten is 70.
The USB I have is the PNY Turbo 128gb USB 3.0 drive. (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FE2N1WS)

I am definitely connecting it to a USB 3 port, and I have tried on multiple computers.
I've tried fixing drivers and using programs to help the speeds but nothing works.

Is my device faulty? Should I just put up with it?

I've gotten it purely to use at Uni, I want to copy several gigs of data at the end of each class so a fast speed is very important.
As it is now it's no faster than using online cloud services for data storage, which is what I was doing before I bought this.

I have read reviews on the Amazon page, other people are getting much faster read/write speeds. (100+mbps)
I have the white model, which I believe is newer.

Should I try get a refund?

Use either one of those then post your results. Transferring a bunch of smaller files is slower than one large file.

Should have bought Sandisk Extreme, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/207886

I ordered it before the MSY deal on the Sandisk, besides I will be using it for storing virtual machines so I need the larger capacity.

      • Do you mind trying CrystalDiskMark?

It could just be you computer.

I was expecting it to be much faster since most of the reviews on Amazon say it's fast. I chose this one over the Ultrafit for the faster speeds.
As I said in the original post I've tested it on multiple computers, this is including the computers at my uni which are top quality. I've used an external SSD through USB 3 on the uni computers and gotten very fast rates.
How can I tell if it's the computer? Shouldn't it just work?
Doesn't feel like I'm getting what I'm paying for if only certain computers allow for good speeds.

  • Speed is going to be affected by how full the drive is and the size of the file you are writing.

    • Ok but the difference in my results and expected results are drastic.
People are quoting 200 read and 100 write while I'm getting 60 read and 30 write.
I've tested with both small files and large files, zero percent full and 50% full.

  • I think I heard about the possible controller swap by the PNY :S
You should try to get a refund.

    • I've noticed since I've made this thread a new review from a customer has came up and they're having the exact problem. (even lowers speeds than mine)

      Thanks for the tip.
