Subaru Forester MY14 or 15? Diesel or Petrol?

Hi all,

Looking to sell my 2011 Forester, and replacing with the MY14 or 15 Forester automatic. Would appreciate your opinions on the following:

1) Petrol or Diesel?

2) Still has engine oil consumption issue like the 2011 Forester in the newer model?

3) When is a good time to buy from the dealer? I remembered reading somewhere it's best to buy car at the end of the year for the previous year model? Don't need new one, just something with good price and low kms.

4) Which year? 14 or 15? Any big improvement on the 15 over the 14?

Any inside advice on how to make offer with dealer? low-balling works? Believe it or not, I never bought a car from dealer before lol.

Thanks!

    1) Petrol or Diesel?

Depends on whether or not you are environmentally aware

Diesel puts more particles into the air and pollutes the cities more. (Europe is now reconsidering Diesel cars for this reason)

Diesel is more economical and better for towing.

Any inside advice on how to make offer with dealer?

Never expect to get the "best" deal, they are more experienced that you, if you expect to beat them at their game, you will end up very stressed, because someone will always tell you after you bought that there was a beter deal to be had. That said research is your best friend. But again more research = more time and what do you value your time at?

Maybe not beating. But just a good to be aware. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8VYNFzmJIQ

  • Yep - watch that video - 2 or 3 times

AND TAKE SOMEONE WITH YOU so you can get an objective review of what happened, after you are done talking

Wait until you've found the car you want before you visit this option. Sounds like you're still in the tyre-kicking stage, working out exactly what you want and when you want it. Find the car, then deal with the dealer.

Are you looking to replace 2 cars over the next few months? The Lancer -> Evo and the Forester -> Forester?

    • haha something like that …EVO not a priority…but Forester I would say probably in the next few months

      • but Forester I would say probably in the next few months

So just get an idea on the market, any new models or updates etc. Especially if you're looking for a used one, you should be able to work out an average selling price, so you can work out when 1 is cheap.

  • Just realised only the petrol model has the "eyesight" function, so petrol it is then since it's a family car

  • What is the typical markup on dealership's car anyway? Anyone here works with a car dealership?

    • There is no 'typical' markup.

Worked out exactly what model and what year you want? And are you ready to buy in the next week?

      • If I can sell my car by next week then yes I will if good deal comes around..

        Just need the base model
