Hair Dryer Recommendations

Hi everyone,

I think I will need a new hairdryer soon because the one I have now smell like it's burning after it is used, and sometimes it doesn't even turn on.

So the question is, is there really a difference between the expensive hairdryers and the cheaper ones?
Are there any features to look out for?

I think the hairdryer I have now was a $20 type one we got last year.

Thanks :)

For years used cheap dryers. They died regularly. Last purchase was an expensive parlux 3800. If I had my time again I would have bought this years ago…

    My 2c

    • Thanks oscargamer, I'll look into that one :)

      • Yep, I second parlux. It's so quiet compared to my old one and much faster drying my hair (I did have a Loreal freebie cheapie though)

  • I have a coles brand hairdryer (Reliance brand) which my wife bought 16+ years ago. used regularly it is fine and does the job.

    • Wow, sounds good. Wonder if they make those, never knew coles sold hairdryers. Definitely going to look into that!

      • saw some about 6 months ago. less than $20

Some are quieter than others (some sound like a jet plane) or lighter. Some of them have features which are supposed to be more gentle on your hair, something to do with ions or whatever. Whether you believe in it or think its just a marketing thing is up to you. Remington makes a large range of these products, from low to mid high end.

    • Yeah, I'm in two minds whether or not it's part of their marketing or not. Haven't really used many hairdryers to notice a difference.

  • Massive difference. As someone with long, thick hair, I take my own hairdryer to hotels, gym, etc because I can't stand the cheaper ones - they take forever to dry my hair. If someone with long hair is going to be using it I would definitely shell out for a better one.

I use a parlux, but if you drop into hairhouse warehouse or price attack you can see what's on offer.

There are features (ceramic, ionic, etc) but I don't really know what they do. I do like the little plastic things you put on the end that directs the air flow.

    • I personally have sorry hair so it doesn't really matey. My partner has very thick hair like you do and she does want a hairdryer to take everywhere as well.

  • I have been using a cheap (<$30) Remington one for nearly 8 years. I recently bought a Philips one for $99 but I can't really find any difference in my hair condition despite its advertisement (ion conditioning, temperature protect, AC motor etc). So if I were you, I wouldn't waste too much on dryer.

    • Yeah that's what I really want to know. If all the features that the more expensive hairdryers claim actually make a difference. They do sounds impressive though, but no idea what they mean.

Haha, that is what I do most of the time. Except for when I shower late'ish and don't want to get into bed with a wet'ish head of hair.
This is more for my partner who uses it quiet regularly.
