iPhone 6S / 6S Plus Discussion. AU Pricing Starting from $1,079 / $1,229

Apple's new phone is out. What do you think?

  • 3D Touch that gives you a different response when you press hard.
  • 12MP camera / 4K video
  • A9 SoC that has 70% faster CPU & 90% faster GPU
  • iOS 9

Doesn't seem to be a big upgrade from iPhone 6/6 Plus. Pricing here. Pretty expensive possibly due to (1) it's an Apple (2) crap AUD.

Storage iPhone 6S iPhone 6S Plus
16GB $1,079 $1,229
64GB $1,229 $1,379
128GB $1,379 $1,529

One thing is for sure…investors aint liking the new phones from the share price movement…

    • Probably because so many people bought iPhone 6 and 6+ that the chances are not many people will buy the new iPhone 6s and 6s+. At least that's one explanation.

      • Or it could be that Apple aren't innovating their product. To paraphrase one review I read recently, the last innovation from Apple on the iPhone was with the contracts they established for book and movie sales. As for the new phones, the faster processor is a big bonus, the force touch could prove useful, but neither of them are game changers.

        • +3

I don't disagree with that too much, my reaction to iPhone 6 was, "wow, they are calling increase in screen size an innovation now? It's not even smaller than Note phones out there in terms of the actual size to screen ratio."

That said, iPhone users and its fanbase is very very very very very very very strong. iPhone 6 sold so much with such little innovation. That's the reason why I think you shouldn't look at it from innovation perspective. People will buy an iPhone because it's the only phone with iOS.

Here are the new innovative functions and hardware advancement that they've talked about during Keynote:

          • Flash for Selfies (G Pro 2)
          • ISOCELL (Galaxy S5)
          • Animated Photo (Galaxy S4)
          • Multi-Window (Note 2)
          • a 12 Inch Tablet with a stylus support (So so many products that I cannot even pinpoint)

I might be off by a generation or so, i.e. Animated Photo might be from earlier products, etc.
I refuse to use the name that they've given it (mainly because I forgot the name that they've given for ISOCELL).

    • +1

Always happens afyer a keynote. The share price tanks because people hype the keynote to high hell and Apple underperforms compared yo the hype. Good time to buy Apple if your in the market as the share price will bounce back fairly quickly. I, however personally don't like how the buisness is being run. How much longer can apple make screen sizes bigger/smaller and pass off a new product. The innovation the company was famous for seems to be lacking.

Hmmm… with the 3d touch thing, I'm just waiting for the following scenario…

    1) Customer presses too hard and bends the iphone out of shape
    2) Apple tells users they are doing it wrong
    3) ???
    4) profit for apple

    • Apparently they took extra care to not have another bendgate or whatever the silly nerds call it this time.

      • Not so much worried about a mistake from apple, more of an underestimate on how stupid some users can be.

      • Yeah, with more weight too aparently, 20g was it?

  • +7

It's expensive which was to be expected. It was very underwhelming, to me we have reached a point like we did years ago with consoles and pc's, there's little benefit to upgrading yearly now. Unless you have a phone from about 3 generations ago, you aren't going to see much benefit buying one of the newer ones. And with the ever increasing prices, it's getting less incentive to do so. $869 the iphone 5s starting point if memory serves me correct, and now $1079 for the new 6s. That's a considerable jump and most people would need the bigger storage model. Apart from the 3d touch gimmick, it hardly seems much different from last year or the year before that. 3d touch will probably take another 12 months for app makers to start using it, and by that point you are looking at new iPhone 7. So there's little incentive to buy one for that function.

The 6s+ has gained some weight too. It's almost 200g, now it's being pedantic, but even the bigger nexus 6 is ligher than that. Even though you probably wouldn't notice much difference.

I suppose that the camera is awesome compared to any other flagship, and being Apple you are getting guaranteed good quality of apps, excellent aftersales customer service etc. However then I look at something like the note 5 and think that even though it's so expensive, yet it still several hundred dollars cheaper than the iPhone.

My limits are usually around $500 for a phone, so I can't see myself getting one at this point. Unless people stop buying Apple phones and they depreciate by heaps or there's a 50% off sale by eBay like with the 5s. I want to wait and see what the next nexus is like. It might be closer to my ideal price range and offer features that I'd like in a phone such as front facing speakers.

    • +1

Have to agree with you on this, my Note 3 and LG G2 from 2 generations ago is as good as my new LG G Flex2 that I bought last month, whatever my G Flex2 can do, the Note 3 and LG G2 can also do.

    • +2

Agree completely - love the apple phones in general but too damn expensive.

    • Me Too .. I wait for nexus phone… Hopeful they ain't raise the price like nexus 6 from motorola

    • Completely agree - Still using my iPhone 4 - NON-S. It still has the same apple format that I like: can be sluggish at times but I don't play iOS games as much as I used to anyways.

  • Any chance the iPad Air 2 will drop in price around Christmas? Current price is $687 for the 64GB WIFI at TGG & OW, I'm not sure if it's worthwhile to wait till Christmas for a price drop. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/210720

    • +1

The 6s+ has gained some weight too. It's almost 200g,

Yea I was surprised it didn't mention it was thinner or lighter during the event. According to gsmarena, ths 6S+ is taller, wider, fatter, and heavier. I do know it's dimensions are such a minimal increase; it's really just nitpicking, but still.

      • +1

Don't think they'll talk about shortcomings at an event meant to promote the device.

  • +9

LOL they still kept the base at 16GB. What a joke. Piss off Apple. 2015 16gb is bullshit. It costs Apple nothing for the storage.

    • +12

They actually don't want you to buy it lol, they want you to be annoyed at that amount so you end up spending an extra $150 for the 64GB model.

    • +2

Yeah it is a joke! I consider myself a very light user, I don't have many apps at all. Mainly use Whatsapp and some banking apps, take some pics here and there. The 16G is so insufficient, I couldn't even update my iOs that needed almost 2G of free space. Deleted a lot of my pics to update. Wouldn't have bothered updating if not for bloody Apple not "supporting" Whatsapp if I don't update. I thought 16G was all I need, but now I know!

    • -5

It costs Apple nothing for the storage.

      What?

      • +5

I think hes trying to say in the scheme of things, the cost of production is not that different.

    • once you take out the space reserved for operating system, emails, contacts, calendar etc., your left with 12gb. (some game apps are 1-2gb each. 500 songs and 4 games and 50 photos = storage full!!!)

  • +15

Oh..the overpriced brick is here again..

    • +1

It doesn't start off as a brick

      • metal and glass :) PLUS Apple logo

  • +3

$1k for a phone. Not for me I'm afraid. Yes, the plummeting Australian dollar is partly responsible for the high price, but Apple's gear is always premium priced.

I don't fancy spending over $1k for something that can be smashed with one careless move. How many other $1k+ items does a person always have with them as a matter of course?

    • +4

that samsung galaxy 6 edge thing is about $1000+ too.

      • +4

Which is no doubt just as unappealing as an iPhone for all the same reasons. So many decent phones can be had for 500-600 it's so hard to justify these higher priced ones.

      • The top model Samsung is $1k+, but Samsung has a wide range of other models for buyers on a smaller budget. Apple releases only premium priced products and then very slowly discounts them after a year when the next model has been released. And if Samsung is too expensive there's a half dozen other mainstream Android brands to choose from.

        • And what is your point exactly ?

        • @punk000:
The top model Samsung is $1k+, but Samsung has a wide range of other models for buyers on a smaller budget. @Gimli:
          1) Cluster: How many other $1k+ items does a person always have with them as a matter of course?
          2) whoopdedoo: that samsung galaxy 6 edge thing is about $1000+ too.

I guess the point I am try to make is just because Samsung also make low end phone doesn't make moot the point whoopdedoo raise and that is "Other company also have phone in the $1k+ range." So what if Apple does not cater for every womyn and her dog.

Just read messages a few level up buddy.

      • With twice the base storage and a price tag that slowly decreases over the course of the year (it retailed for ~$1100, but can already be found for under $1000).

  • +2

And I thought the current 6 prices were ridiculous.

To me it sounds extremely "1st world"… its expensive in the US and anything not US, even canada is extremely expensive.

  • Friend on facebook. Her post today: Iphone 6s is here! Who wants my old iP6? going to take a day off to line up

    facepalms all around.

    • you know the place has gone mad and there is no business like iphone business when people line up… at midnight… to shove $1k at apple… en masse…

in one way i wish i could get this enthusiastic about anything, but nothing would make me do that

      • +1

People lined up for Windows 95. No ragrets!

    • I'm guessing she doesn't even know its new features.

      • +3

sell her the same iP6, doubt she'll even realize

      • -7

Most iPhone users have no idea of the specs of their phones - all they care about is the logo and status symbol they blindly believe it implies. The iPhone 6 Plus is not even close to my Note 3 in any spec department and the Note 3 is 2 generations old.

I am glad Samsung have phones that are similar in price to the iPhones as a disturbing trend I am noticing lately is that people with Apply products reckon people with Samsung gear are too poor to afford the Apple stuff and would buy it in an instant if they had the money. I wouldn't go back to an iPhone if they were a 10th of the price they are.

        • +3

On a quick scan, this is a link to one of the better benchmarks comparing the 2 devices. However, it makes no comparison of the quality (eg. colour accuracy across the spectrum, etc). It's purely hard numbers.

          http://www.ubergizmo.com/products/lang/en_us/devices/galaxy-…

Your statement "The iPhone 6 Plus is not even close to my Note 3 in any spec department and the Note 3 is 2 generations old" doesn't hold water - it's simply not true. If you actually research, you'll find some very, very lengthy reviews of the iPhone 6/plus and/or the note 3 and/or the Galaxy Edge. These will give you true insight into comparisons of these devices. Most reviews are rubbish and miss most of the facts. This may explain your incorrect statement.

        • +2

I'd probably try it for 1/10th the price tbh.

  • +1

I also like the graph about the new A9 chip gpu being almost double the power of consoles. I can't recall if it was the iPad pro or phone because I was skipping through. But anyhow, I wonder what consoles they were referring too? lol

    • +1

Also, desktop CPU as well. Some of their iMac line uses laptop CPU , I wonder whether they were referring to that.

    • Ouya is the console they are comparing it to

      • Wait? Seriously??? That's Tegra 3, isn't it?

  • +10

This phone is known as the IPhone 'Success' in New Zealand.
(Spoiler alert - try to say iPhone 6s in a kiwi accent)

    • sex es?

      • +2

Sexy is reserved for iPhone 6c

        • +1

Still waiting for iPhone 6cs :P

    • Is this serious?

      • +2

        Yeah we have iPhone success
        And others have mentioned
        Iphone sexy (6c)
        iPhone sexiest (6cs)

        • +1

          :P I'd call it sexy ass :P

    • +1

      This isn't ChoiceCheapies mate.

  • +4

For those dismissing the price raises as AUD weakness, what's the excuse when the price was same or more than the US price when AUD was 1.10 USD?

    • +5

All cooporations are bastards who only wants to maximise profit. They will increase price to maintain the profit, but will not reduce the price unless it increases their profit. Also, there is a cost associated with changing prices as well (they literally call it a "menu cost").

      • They are all a bunch of scumbags.

        • +2

Every single one of them. Though, that's what drives companies. They are not noble beings who'd willing to part with their profit for consumer benefits, they'd only do so if it grants them more profit in future. That's what free market is all about. When you start having consumers who do not react to price changes, that's where the idea of free market starts to fail.

      • +1

damn those scumbag companies for trying to make a profit.

        • I was not trying to suggest that profit maximising is a bad thing, I am simply saying that it's their main goal.
Their goal's not to make the users enjoy innovation or something like that; they are not a noble being.
I've used strong words because I found some people defend the company they like too much imo, as if the companies are doing something noble for them.

  • What do you guys reckon are the chance of scalpers as well as demand? Any chance of me selling a brand new one at a higher price?

    • +1

That is frowned upon here. lol. I think you could. Many others would think like you and just buy it to resell it, which while Apple will have limited stock at each store so they would all be sold out. When customers realise it is sold out everywhere, they must think it's really good and will be desperate to buy it. That's my theory :D

      • Lol yeah i only just realised that this was OZbargain and believe me this site is what twitter/facebook is to everyone else i'm constantly on here haha. But as a normal uni student gotta make a little extra money somehow when the opportunity presents itself :D

        • Some people offered to line-up for someone else for a fee. You could try that, with a better chance of success.

      • Hunger Marketing :P

    • might work if you flog them off in china. it did a few years ago.

  • Final year overseas tablets would take out contracts with the major providers, sell the brand new phones they got on scumtree and then scarper

  • Currently have a waterlogged/dead iPhone 5 and a fantastic Huawei y550 for $45. Will wait for the iPhone 7 next year before the upgrade.

  • I guess, I'll stick with my 4s, or might jump to Note 5.

    • The Note 5 doesn't have expandable memory, so that is a big negative for some…

      • +11

He has an iphone; he is use to non expandable storage.

        • +2

          And non-changeable battery…

        • -1

@dogboy: The Note 5 does have a removable battery.

        • @Marrk:

          It does not.

        • -

      • I don't have the need for much of space, I would be fine with 32/64 GBs. Non replaceable battery won't be much of issue if it last me through the day.

      • -1

Yes it does, I have a 64GB microSD card in mine now.

        • You have the Note 4.

        • @ozhunter: Sorry, half asleep..

  • +8

If you haven't buy into the iOS ecosystem, doesn't the Sony Xperia 5 Premium beat the iPhone6s in almost all technical aspect?

I understand that in Asia, even the poor will buy an iPhone 6, mainly for face value and a sign of status and wealth.
So coming from that perspective, an iPhone is a bit like a Louis Vuitton bag?
Explains how Apple could charge so much for their devices.
Apple is (still) making a killing. I am disappointed.

    • +3

There's vendor lock-in and an unwillingness to change for e.g

If you have purchased 100$ worth of stuff on iTunes for e.g you'll probably don't want to part with your purchases, and you know if you switch you're forfeiting all the iTunes stuff — you'd have to start over and many of your stuff cannot be transferred, including your icloud contents, phone settings et cetera.

and second most people are resistant to change. Much like how some people refuse to make the switch from Windows XP to Windows 8 and desperately want to keep using it for a bit longer because they dislike the changes made to the UI.

      • Yeah, if you are used to an OS, it's hard to move to another OS because there is a learning curve as well. I was constantly pressing the side of the home button on iPhone for a bit out of habbit (when I had to send my phone for repair and was using a 4s).

      • On the other hand, you could save more than $500 from not buying the iphone and send all the savings repurchasing all your apps, books and songs from Play store and still have plenty of change left over.

    • It appears even Apple agrees with you on that one ;)
      http://www.phonearena.com/news/Sony-asks-Siri-about-battery-…

    • You can't really just going off tech specs in these situations. Apple control both the hardware and software in one package. This allows them to just make things work. They don't have to worry about making big numbers on the spec sheets like all the Android competitors do.

As a user of both Android (nexus 5) and iOS (iphone 4s), i can tell you iOS uses nowhere near as hardware load as android does.

  • +4

Amazing that a LG G4 is half the price.

Apple are taking the piss with these prices.

  • +2

    So if i get the 16gb version, i can take 1 4k video…not videos ?

  • Strikes me as a giant waste of money to be honest.

    • +2

maybe if you get the 6s plus.

the 6s isn't big enough to be called a giant…

  • +10

I've owned iPhones for years. 3G, 4, 5. Skipped the 6 as the 5 was doing fine. I'm actually going to jump ship now, the Sony Z5 Premium will be my next phone. I've had a play with Android Lollipop on a cheapo Telstra 4GX Buzz and it's entirely decent. I checked every one of my iPhone apps that I need (particularly the travel apps) and they're all there on Android.

    Seeya, Apple.

    • Z3+/Z4 just came out like 2 months ago. Damn sony, that was quick

      • +1

heating issue with SD810 chips on Z3+and Z4, have to roll out Z5 for marketing.

        • +1

Next year it will be Galaxy S7 vs iphone 7 vs Xperia Z7.

  • sadly it looks like the iphone 5 will be my last iphone, no way im paying $1200 for a "mobile phone"

next phone would be a cheaper android (https://oneplus.net/one) or a nokia windows phone

    • Nokia is no longer producing a phone (at least until 2016) after they've sold their mobile department to MS.

  • +5

Im pretty sure people will be crazy about this.
Hundreds/thousands will queue, there will not be enough stock for everyone, and people ended up buying this from scalpers.

  • +3

Like everyone here, I agree this is too expensive but I'll buy one in a flash when the price is right (way into next year). Especially if I can return a profit when selling my 6.

    • Keep the 6, get a 7 way into next year. 6S is not a big enough upgrade.
